Whats up with all the Tim Teufel refferences? Any way.

I will guess 35 large. If it includes stickers maybe 40.

I wonder who compiled this collection or was it ever registered? Bryant Collection holds a large number of registry best sets in basketball. Its not his set is it?

    Mastro linkey
  • The stickers are in a seperate auction thats up to 5,000.00
  • Not really that rare anymore it seems like one of these comes up every auction or so.

There are about 4,500 PSA 10 1986-87 Fleer that have been graded so far. I predict in the next year or two, that number will probably double, so no, this is NOT a good time to buy in my humble opinion.

This set is the most popular on the registry so there will always be demand. However, the supply is constantly rising and the prices for PSA 10's have really dropped in the last few years. There are 15 cards that have a pop of 20 or less in PSA 10. For investment purposes I would think there are far better buys in a Mastro auction.
  • It's a great set, but I think the trend is down for the time being. It's not that tough in PSA 10.

Most commons have only had 500 cards submitted. Compare that to 11,000 Jordans. Some cards are tougher than others, but there must be at least 50-100 10's of every player, conservatively.

DBH you really think the Pop of 10's will DOUBLE in the next 2 years? that seems like a bold statement! thats an awful lot of 86 wax being cracked.

A lot of it will be new wax and a lot it will be a as result of people just resubmitting PSA 9s and getting bump ups in grade.

I don't see the trend of the WCsports1's who flood the market with their PSA 10s stopping.

As a collector of the set yourself, what do you think of what's happened to the pop report on the Dominque Wilkins card?

Oh, I dont know anything about the pop report...

I go through boxes, binders, stacks of these cards, find the best looking ones I can, and put them in my notebook. when I finish, that'll be the end of it for me.

I have submitted 10 or so of these though, and have gotten mostly 9's and no 10's, so I had to imagine 10's are very tough. I have looked at hundreds of 86 fleers and I guess I have never seen a 10 quality card, because I bought the best, and only got 9's. Maybe the fact I dont send 1000 at a time hurts my chance at 10s, I really dont know.

The majority of the wax is already cracked. There are people who hoarded this stuff back in 86 through 88 when it was junk!! In 89..I had 20+ sets and 10K singles kicking around..all from wax. When I closed my 1st store in 94...I sold off what was left (5K box)....just as PSA had started to come around. Shoulda kept it...lol But who knew??

The guy I sold it to had atleast 100K singles kicking around. He's been steadily selling partial sets and singles since then.

He's just one guy...how many others are like that out there!!??!!

When I had gone through my sets for grading...I made 2 complete PSA 9 sets and a mixed 8 and 9 set. That was 3 years ago...my 1st PSA 9 set sold for over $4K....you won't see those numbers again. Too much has come out of the woodwork.

I only recieved 6- 10's in all that I graded. They sold well in excess of todays 10's.
Heck, back then..I was able to get $100+ for a Larry Bird 9!!

Look on Ebay...seller wwfbedroom..this guy has been selling partial sets and sticker sets on Ebay to the tune of 1 -2 (or more) a week for years!! He either spends alot of time at shows buying everyone out...or has a connection like the guy above. Who knows...

As for doubling pops....there have been loads graded lately. With the modern specials popping up constantly...it's just a matter of time before this set gets shot in the foot!! Might not be 2 years..but it's not that far off either...

I agree with DBH (as is usual)....but how many cases of the stuff did Dave and Adams pick up in their find a few months ago? a 20 box case alone puts nearly 9,000 more potential 10s into circulation...which in perfect world is approximately 65 more sets.

The days of a $50K jordan 10 are definitely over!

I highly disagree with the "shot in the foot theory" of this set. I don't think we will ever see a set of 10's go lower tha $20,000 again.

    1. This basketball set is the equivlant of 1952 topps baseball. There will never be a basketball set loaded with rookies of such a high calibur as this. Too many future HOFer's to count.

    2. There are centering problems with this set making it difficult to qualify.

    3. Three words: Michael Jordan Rookie.

    4. This is one of hand full card sets from the 80's (all sports) that will bring in this type of money.

    Enough said.

~"As a collector of the set yourself, what do you think of what's happened to the pop report on the Dominque Wilkins card?"~

dabighurt - The Wilkins card is still a low pop in PSA 10 with only 18 of them out there. I sold my ten in November and at the time it was a one of 17. Since than there has been one ten - the one wcsports1 just auctioned. Interestingly, when I sold mine they were selling consisently in the $1800 to $2000 range. The one your buddy had sold for over $4200.

did you think before you wrote this?

smr on 1952 topps baseball on psa 9 set over $1,000,000
smr of 1986 fleer basketball under $40,000 or 4% of 52 topps, psa 9 under 5000 or about 1/2% of 52 topps in same condition

    pop counts 52 topps 921 psa 9 NQ and 51 psa 10
    pop count 86 fleer 33197 psa 9 4450 psa 10

existing wax 52 topps? easier to find osama
existing wax 86 fleer call steve hart and it will in the mail the next day.

86 fleer too many hall of famers to count, try the 48 bowman set, the 57 topps of my favorite the 1961 fleer.

the 1986 fleer has many nice players. it is not scarce in high grade psa and it gets less scarce each week.

if you want to chase the set go ahead. if you chase it two years from know it will much cheaper. anything that begin with 198x in the sports card world will never be rare.

    Czar,

<< <i>did you think before you wrote this? >>

Did you read my post before you responed?

I guess I have to be specific. I never stated 1986 Fleer basketball is a better set than 1952 Topps baseball. That would be absurd! What I said was:

<< <i>There will never be a basketball set loaded with rookies of such a high calibur as this. >>

    Stressing the word BASKETBALL.

Thanks for all the fun facts though!

    fur,
i did read your post. no you never said it was better. your exact words were:

This basketball set is the equivlant (sic) of 1952 topps baseball

that to me means as good as.

on a happier note what grade do you collect in 1966 baseball?
  • fur72fur72 Posts: 2,348 ✭✭
I guess I could have said the "Crown Jewel of Basketbal sets"

Any way. I dont have any 66 graded yet, been buying raw, Just sent in a Mantle though!

The lot sold for $27,000 plus the juice.

That's roughly half the price of the set that sold two years ago?

    OUCH!

I hate it when i have to admit DaBH was right!!
  • I've got boxes of opened 86-87 Fleer basketball that I haven't touched for 15 years.

I've got dozens of HOF'ers in holders from that set, none graded, none will be graded unless I choose
to sell, and why sell, everyone who wants them has them.

I'm sure there are hundreds of people just like me with that stuff in the closet.

The price can only go down.
