On this date, August 2nd 1979 the New York Yankees captain Thurman Munson died in a tragic plane crash.

    Thurman was my mom's favorite player. I was 13 at the time and I remember my mom couldn't believe it. She became a Yankee fan because I was a fan and a Little Leaguer.

    It may sound funny, but the Yankees and Thurman made my mom and I closer in those days and still to this day. It wasn't until Paul O'Neill came along that my mom found a new favorite.

    I was 10 and was crushed. I was so excited because we had a bus trip up to see the Yanks play the Orioles coming soon. It was a innocent hot summer day that effectivley brought an end to my early youth.

    I was all of one year of age when Thurm went down, so I don't remember it. However being a Yankees fan I'm very aware of what he ment to the team, the fact that of all the Yankees to come along since Lou Gehrig(like all the guys in my name for example) it was Thurm who the Yankees choose to be the first team captain since The Iron Horse I think says ALOT about the man.

    I remember it, I was 20 something at the time. I think that George Steinbrenner paid a lot of
    the associated funeral expenses out of his own pocket. A nice thing to do.

    I'm to young to have memories of this, but my Grandpa told me stories about the Yankees every summer I would spend with him up in Fords, NJ. He recalled his memories of it to me(As well as basically the late 1920's through Donnie Baseball coming up), and we always watched Yankees games together from when I was a little kid until he passed away when I was a teenager. It's sad Munson had to go out that way.

    figures, bad mouthing the vp. Munson was selfish, just like the athletes who injure themselves on motorcycles. As for my karma, I don't worry bout it. Maybe I will be reincarnated as someone who can actually fly planes
