National Baseball Day Cards. No wonder kids aren't collecting.

I know there are quite a few dealers on here and this may rattel some heads. I feel the need to say something since I believe it hurts the future of our hobby.

Since National Baseball Card Day I have noticed numerous auctions for cases of these special cards. Its my understanding these packs were to be given out free if you bought a pack of baseball cards from you local card or hobby shop. It is also my understanding that dealers recieved these at no cost to them. Now all I see is greedy card dealers trying to turn a profit on a promotional item that was designed to attract people to card shops to increase sales and interest our hobby. If you recieved some of these free cards and are trying to sell a few great, no problem. But when I see entire cases for sale on Ebay all I can say is shame on you!

  • My local dealer got his in 2 weeks after NTCD. It is kinda hard to give them to kids when they buy a pack when you don't have them. Plus you gotta have kids buying cards in the first place.

Does that make it right to sell them on ebay? Give a free pack to a kid if he comes into the store to try to get him interested in the hobby.

The only time I went to one of those was a couple of years ago.

I went a couple hours after it "started", and I was told all of the packs had been given out.

There were about 15 kids there, but they were all playing some sort of role playing card game. I'll assume they received them all.

This is one of those things that gives the good guys a bad name.

The reports on these promotions are mixed. If more good than bad comes of this - then it's gonna help the hobby.

I totally agree - these should not be appearing in this way. But, at this point, I don't think even the card manufacturers will want to do anything about it.

Finally, the guy selling these may have "backdoored" them someplace other than a card shop. These things are probably a cooperative package from different card companies - so there had to be a contract for distribution?

So, what I'm saying - a card shop may not even be behind this?

    Stone,

Good points! But just search on Ebay for National Baseball Card Day and look at all the hits you get and notice the dealers involved.

I am glad I have a good dealer in my area. He was great with last years Topps Football card promo. I only came in every few weeks but he kept all the cards and even the first packs that were given out. Always asked what I need for my set. In fact he probably still has some and would still pass them out.

I was in a card shop a few weeks AFTER the National Baseball Day promotion, and the guy behind the counter handed me a pack after I bought a $4 card. Nice guy. He handed them out for free with any sports card purchase, 1 per customer. Either business wasn't too good, or he has a really short client list.

  • Again before the dealers can give them out to kids there has to be kids who are interested in sportscards coming in. Most of the kids that come into my local shop are Magic and Warhammer players which I enjoy as well, but they could care less about the sportscards.
