What an f'ing massacre

Here we go again - the GOD who refuses to grade anything post 1972 a PSA 10 (except for a couple) and anything pre-1973 a PSA 9. Thankfully the Wheaties stamps weren't mine but far too many cards are 1 to 2 grades below what they should be. Absolutely ridiculous. The Jaguars and Panthers Inaugural cards are very sweet - I can't believe that not 1 graded a PSA 10. The 1980 Payton and Anderson cards also kill me - they were all solid 9's...yet were graded as 8's. I guess that PSA wanted to generate more revenue for me to submit the cards again to obtain the grades that are rightfully deserved.

As I said, these weren't mine. I have no idea.

Wow - that is over $1,000 in grading fees for otherwise awful grades.

I got killed recently, too - but it was only about 40 cards
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I've noticed w/ the 07xx grader that there are certain issues that he/she will automatically grade a certain grade. For instance, the 2004 Fan Favorites have graded PSA 8 across the board even through some were better. Also, he/she will not grade any of my 1989 Score cards over PSA 9. What a shame to flush all that money down the toilet.

I just got mine and got crushed as well. Same stuff I have been sending and getting higher grades consistantly. Small sub though so it isn't a big deal. makes me sick that I have been waiting patiently for these grades. the graders must be pi$$ed with all the work that came in from the national or something.

greg as for you sub , it looks like that hurts . that is why I always break my subs into 50 card subs at the most.

By the way, the only card I was pleasantly surprised about was the Warren Moon rc (graded a PSA 9), which was graded a PSA 8 on the last massacre.

    Packcollector,

You have a good point. I really need to start submitting smaller orders. I hate paying for shipping, which is why I send in large orders.

Same here, I'll take the hit on shipping to hopefully spread out the cards over the grader pool. I hate to get a big sub graded by GOD.

    The Wheaties are mine.

They were carefully exacto'd along the perforated border. Tearing them out by hand can ruin the stamp.

I talked with PSA and they said any card that is perforated MUST be removed by hand and no tool can be used or they automatically consider it
"trimming". Even though all of the stamps will measure to original spec.

    $300 lesson learned.

Oh and the two Dell stamps are mine. Same thing. Even though I left the full border + a small marigin on each stamp.

    No good.

I just looked over my sub and this may be the 1st time I can say that I have little to NO value in a submission.

the only thing I was happy about is they graded my 67 vene koufax a 1 and didn't send it back no grade due to back damage. the rest was pretty much a waste of time , I am getting back 2 min size vouchers . 1 for a card that was graded twice before. the rest is a hodge podge of trash, oh well.
  • carew4mecarew4me Posts: 3,473 ✭✭✭✭
    Here is the odd part.

About 5 of the stamps i removed by hand before I switched to exacto becasue I was nervous about damaging the stamps.
Yet all were listed as "evidence of trimming".

So basically instead of each stamp getting judged on its own they assumed the whole group was trimmed.

Works out great for them. They pocket $300 but do not grade each stamps on its merits alone.

I just traveled a similar road. 100 post-1990 cards, and something like 30 tens. Blech.

But, it's up to PSA. If they don't want to make it clear what a card needs to exhibit in order to acheive a certain grade then their submissions will suffer. As the prices of graded cards continues to drop, people need a much clearer idea of what is expected of a card to make a certain grade. If they don't get that clearer idea then they won't submit. Plain and simple. If I knew what they wanted (or if they even knew, to be more precise) in a card to get it into a 10 holder I could send them a money order for 8K with a boatload of cards tomorrow. But since I refuse to jerk around with 9's I won't do it.

If you don't get the grades you think the cards deserve, then vote with your wallet and don't submit them.

this will not work because I think in most cases for most submitters , you still end up ahead. i sent in 35 random cards from all sports and era's on this last minute sub, a 200 investment. even getting crushed , I will probably get back 150 bucks and toss the rest. the cards were worth 10 or less each to start ungraded , probably $50 for the lot except for the few i sent for specific reasons like the koufax so net loss is probably 100 bucks if you considered the raw had any sale value beforehand or 50 if the raw is what it is, random junk taking up space in my house. so I lose 100, then take all the other times when you get what you were expecting and you earn 1000 percent on your submission.

so the net is that the cards are worth and will sell for a lot more in total even with the beatings that we sometimes take.

What's a PSA 9 Derrick Brooks SP go for? I may be interested if it's available.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

I think they need to do something other than call cut stamps "trimmed". Cutting stamps out isn't the same as trimming a card.

    Greg,

Sorry to hear that you got nailed. I am still waiting for my sub that was submitted the same day as yours in Chicago and logged in on the same day back in CA. I hope I dont suffer the same fate as you. I guess I will wait nicely for mine to pop soon, I sent in 80 cards. I just hope there arent a bunch of label errors.

Who did they confuse Marino for this time.

I think we should start a post with the most insane label errors that people have gotten. I am thinking the Elway for Marino or my Rothlisberger for Favre should rate pretty high. To bad I wasnt able to get a scan of the Rothlisberger for Favre one as I called them before they could send it out. I cant wait to scane the Elway for Marino.

  • I don't send into PSA anymore after I sent in a perfectly perfect, super unbelievable, razor sharp perfect beautiful 1975 Lynn Swann Rookie that came back a 9. And I know the difference b/w to two grades as I can grade with the best of them. I will only buy cards already slabbed. It's like gambling getting your cards graded. They are way too inconsistent. I've been picking up some quality SGC stuff lately for much less.
  • I'll get you that scan as soon as I can Greg. I'm interested in the Carson auto, maybe the 84 PSA 10 as well. Whoever paid for those Wheaties(and to be graded!) took a big chunk of change out of their pocket. Yeesh.

My largest single submission in the last 3 years is 25 cards...For me it is TOTALLY worth the extra shipping charge to not have 100 cards at a time meet the grader of death...It's worked out because it seems for every bad sub, I get a better than expected sub...

If you can stomach the extra $15-$20 return shipping fee, split up your orders into smaller orders...That way, you have a better chance of not getting every single card hammered...25 of the cards might, but not all of them...Every grader has their pet peeves, and you never know which one you're going to get...

    Better luck next time Greg,

Tough grades...sucks when you spend a ton of time going through, over and over, only to get sledgehammered.

If they judge a card as 'evidence of trimming', don't they refund the grading charge? It was my understanding that any card they don't holder, they don't charge the fee for? Or am I mistaken?

I like the sound of that. Especially considering that anyone with a sheet of stamps would be inclined to cut along the perfs so thay dont kill the stamp.

Now if I trim too far one way or another and its out of spec, they I would fully expect that type of result.

But PSA rep said its a rule, if its perforrated, you can cut it with scissors, exacto etc no matter how well you do it.

The problem with smaller modern subs is you either have to wait for a $5 special or pay $8 for them to slab modern inserts and commons (no thanks). I'm not sure there is a good solution other than not sending much of anything in that isn't worth submitting multiple times.

no, i'm pretty sure they only refund for stuff like factory miscuts, or issues they dont grade, or cards are too thick(modern), something like that.. but they dont refund for trims, re-colors, or anything they deem to be doctored..

Carew, they made the assumption and din't put in the effort to doublecheck them all. I once sent in a ton of stickers and they rejected them all saying that the stickers were coming off the backing. In reality, that was only true for some of them. In my case though, I received a credit voucher.

Hey smallstocks did you see my submission about 3 up this from this line?? All of mine were cut with a BIC RAZOR BLADE. Guess i outsmarted PSA for once!! Let's see if i go 2 for 2 as i sent more of these in on the last day of June. Along with several 1971 Dell Stamps.
  • Greg, thanks so much for your post. I have been contemplating whether or not to renew my subscription. I don't think I will. I am tired of the arbitrary and capricious manner in which PSA grades and the absolutely most rotten customer treatment I've seen in a long time. They seem to make up / change the "rules" as they go. Getting one's cards graded is a big cr*p-shoot with the cards stacked against the average collector. I, for one, will not be submitting anymore cards for grading...
