97 years ago: The first Lincoln cents are released to the public

On August 2, 1909 the First Lincoln Cents, designed by Victor David Brenner were released to the general public. The new cent replaced the Indian Head design, in use since 1859....
The release created a rush among the people. Everyone wanted to see and own the new cent, and when news was spread out that the designer's initials "VDB" would be removed, people wanted the first design even more. That started the life of one of the most collected coins in US history, The Lincoln Cent.
