Seriously, If you had $4000 to spend........

If you had $4000 to spend with no harm, no foul to your finances, what (edited: coin or coins) would you buy and why?

ps: I already practice the maxim of "collect what you like". I'm just curious to see what forum members would purchase. Consider your answer as if the coin or coins were available and the terms of the deal and the condition of the coin or coins were amenable.

Best regards,

Why? Because I don't believe there's been a buffalo thread yet today. image

I see by the responses so far, this is going to be one of those threads.

  • Sorry, it's just that there was a whole series of these threads the other day at various price points, ending I believe with "If you had $1 Billion to spend . . . ." It was unclear whether purchases were permitted to be made from Mel Gibson, Jane Fonda, or Osama Bin Laden.

1 or 2 monster toned Morgans, a $10 Indian and a nice lustrous SLQ.
  • $4000 would go a very long way for me. I doubt that I spend that much in a year of collecting. So I'll answer this as the "If you could spend $4000.00 on one coin . . ." question.

An 1876-CC $10 in VF. Low mintage. Low survival rate. Exotic mint mark. Low cost because few $10 Lib. collectors. A cool coin.
The strangest things seem suddenly routine.

I would buy 1 single coin, as opposed to a number of lesser pieces.

I would probably try to find a nice PCGS slabbed unc. colonial or early US type coin.

You can find some great pieces which are genuinely scarce if not really rare, in very high grade and which represent great value IMO.

In colonials, $4,000 will get you a PCGS MS62-3 Fugio, or a great MS63 or 64 Washington Small or Large Eagle, an MS62 Nova Constellatio, etc.

In early type, you can get an exceptional Draped Bust Half Cent in the same price range.

Maybe a lower grade mint state 1877 cent.

I would happily buy an Original 1845 half cent in Proof slabbed by PCGS or NGC. Why? It's a difficult date in the run of proof-only half cents, and if you have one for sale, PM me or page me at ANA.

Sorry for the blank posts...I keep doing that. It seems natural to hit the enter key after typing my login info...

Anyway, don't you have an area of specialization? I'm kindo new here but I see several guys that it is easy for me to pick up on their area. I'm kindo simple: I like anything with a 7 for the second digit in F or better. I also like the last advice on the seated liberty dollars and I like standing liberty quarter. I would avoid anthing toned, I see over the past couple of days that it can be very controversial!!!!

  • I would upgrade a couple more of me Early Commemoratives. PCGS MS66 - 67.

... I would buy a super-deep mirrored 1884-CC PCGS MS66 DMPL untoned Morgan. Someone, or some group, is seriously hoarding high end DMPL Morgans and it won't be long before everyone figures it out. If you look at their availability this year as compared to last year, the supply has almost completely dried up. And, it isn't just because I am buying them all either. There is some major money picking these off slowly but surely.

    Stone Mtn. in PCGS 66 . . . Vermont in 65 . . . Lafayette in 63 . . .

    Bingo . . . I'm done. Then just finish up a couple of Morgans . . . . . . .

(Might even be enough left over for dinner.)
