Will Papelbon win AL Rookie of the Year and Cy Young?

Has it ever been done before?

Comments

  • I don't think he will win cy young or rookie of the year imo. Yes, he's had an amazing year. Fransisco Liriano is tied for the 2nd most wins in the Majors, and has the lowest ERA at 1.96 and opposing batters are hitting a svelte .192 off him. In my opinion a quality starter is much more important than a closer. Both are amazing rookies; I think this is one of the strongest rookie classes.
    Collecting;
    Mark Mulder rookies
    Chipper Jones rookies
    Orlando Cabrera rookies
    Lawrence Taylor
    Sam Huff
    Lavar Arrington
    NY Giants
    NY Yankees
    NJ Nets
    NJ Devils
1950s-1960s Topps NY Giants Team cards

Looking for Topps rookies as well.

He very well could win both, especially if both the twins (Liriano) and Blue Jays (Halladay) finish out of the playoffs.

I don't know if it's been done before, but to this point, he's got a good shot. Liriano is going to miss his next start, hopefully he's not seriously hurt.

I don't believe anyone has won the Cy Young Award and ROY in the same season, though I recall that Fred Lynn won the MVP and the ROY in 1975, if I'm not mistaken. The odds are stacked against a reliever winning the Cy Young and I'd be surprised if it happened this year, too. I remember a couple of years ago when Mariano Rivera was lights out all year long and he was like 3rd in the voting. If someone in the AL wins 20 games, they'll probably get the Cy Young, too, IMO.

  • I believe Fernando Valenzuala won both awards in 81. Not positive on the year but im pretty sure i remember him winning both

Don't forget Ichiro also did it in 01

I think Liriano would win both before Papelbon.

We are forgetting about Justin Verlander. He may beat both. Right now, I think Verlander is the favorite for both Cy Yound and ROY.

  • Fernando did in fact win both in 1981.

I forgot about Fernando in '81 winning both, though that was the strike year so all stats are skewed because of the abbreviated season.

Ichiro was about as much a "rookie" when he won the AL ROY in 2001 as Hideki Matsui was when he won it for the Yankees. Sorry, but I just don't consider guys who come to the majors after playing major league baseball in other countries for extended periods of time as rookies, in the true sense of the word and what it should mean and I think MLB ought to distinguish that fact in the voting.

Hideki Matsui was when he won it for the Yankees.

    Matsui did not win it.

    Good for you.
  • at this moment, verlander gets my top vote. liriano is 2nd, papelbon is 3rd, weaver is 4th (and could be as high as 2nd if liriano struggles after his DL stint and papelbon continues to blow saves) and jenks is 5th.

Im not sure why verlander isnt in this discussion of ROY and cy young candidacy.

I agree with you about Verlander - I might put him first as well. But, Papelbon is a close second - Liriano is an amazing talent, but he may not pitch again for a while because of this latest injury.
