Has anyone converted the 70 point scale to the 100 point scale?

Would would a XF 45 become?

    45/70 = X/100

    X = 64.2

Only half credit for not showing your work where you cross-multiplied and then divided both sides by 70.

I've figured out a 4 postion grading system with the first digit equating to the current grading scale (1=Pr 2=AG 3=G 4=VG 5=F 6=VF 7= EF 8=AU 9=MS). The other three digits would equate to surface quality within the grade, strike, and color (or overall appeal). In 9, a second digit of 5 would make the coin equialent of an MS65 today with the 2 additional digits giving a strike and color ranking too. A 9999 would have a real eye popper of a look.

I don't believe that would be how it would work. MS wouldn't start at a repeating decimal but some integer, like 70 or 80. My biggest problem with the 100 point scale is that the 70 point scale isn't even being fully utilized. Yes, some graders are splitting hairs with stars and PQ on MS grades. The circulated grades OTOH are a joke. Might as well just use VF, VF+, VF++ and XF- for VF20, VF25, VF30, and VF35, for instance. Nearly 85% of the Sheldon scale is devoted to circulated grades, a full 59 points out of 70. Is there really a market need for that graduation? DO we really need more than that when we don't even use what we have? There is nothing to compute or interpolate using a coins grade to arrive at a valuation; so it is silly to raise a decimal simplification argument.

On further reflection, since the original intent of the Sheldon scale was to approximate the relative worth in various grades, I give you:

    PO-01
    FR-02
    AG-03
G-4 and G-6 (no change so far)
VG-8 and VG-10 (still no change)
    F-15 and F-20
    VF-30, VF-40 and VF-50
    EF-70 and EF-90
    AU-120, AU-150, AU-200 and AU-250
    MS-200, MS-225, MS-250, MS-350, MS-500, MS-800, MS-2000, MS-5000 and MS-10000.

  • if the 70 point system changes to 100 I am going to be angry. I see no problem with the 70 point system. I think the only reason PCGS is considering switching is because they will insert more grades into the mix, thus have more people resubmitting coins for the next higher grade.

I'm going to repeat my post from another thread:

I would be out of my mind with fury at the chaos and stupidity that would result from switching to the 100-point scale. It would probably drive me away from the hobby, at least for a long hiatus.
