PSA Should Remove Cards Like These from Circulation

Who thinks PSA should spend some of it's money to remove cards like these from circulation. They should hire anonymous buyers who do nothing but keep these from public viewing. That's just awful.1963 Topps PSA 8 Clemente

I wonder if that came from the Baker/Rocchi regime?

When did asking for 'no qualifiers' on a submission start? This is an older flip so I'm not sure if at that time you could ask for NQ's. Is this technically a 9 but was given an 8 due to centering? Doesn't present like a 9 however. Agreed it gives a bad rap to psa to have this card in circulation.

  • PSA will buy overgraded cards back if they meet certain criteria, not being too expensive is main thing. Otherwise they will try to justify the grade.
To be fair it seems that is how the other grading companies operate as well.

A pixel counter on this blury picture says about 29/71. I guess the grader could have guessed and even 30/70, the very lowest PSA 8 centering can be.

If it was PERFECT in every other way, I could call it an 8. However, it looks from the picture as if at least one of the bottom corners is showing white.

There's some cracking along the right part of the slab too...

I will have to take your word on the pixel count, but that looks closer to 85/15 to me based on a quick glance. My opinion remains that NM-MT to MINT cards need to have at least 60/40 centering for 8 level, and at least 55/45 to be a 9. Seems that both SGC and PSA have centering req's that are loose and are quite different than mine.

edited to add .... if you need to count pixels to determine centering, it isn't centered.

Buy the card, not the holder.

By my pixel count on the borders (L/R) I get .2857 and .7143. Obviously that wouldn't meet the minimum 30/70, but the minimum aside, the visual appeal of the card does not warrant a grade of 8. The bottom left corner also appears to have too much wear on it.... and I'm not even going to get started about how the right side of the holder appears to be seriously cracked.

What they should remove is the grader.

If this card came out of the WIWAG fiasco then wouldn't PSA have the cert's that were affected and could get this card pulled? They needed to print a list of all possible affected cards so we wouldn't have to speculate when one came up.

Looks like it was fairly graded. Meets all the criteria for a PSA 8. What's the problem?

How can you say that when the centering falls outside of the PSA guidelines of 70/30???

One should never take DaBigHurt's posts literally. He answers as if he was a "Joe Orlando-type" spokesperson for PSA. Treat all his responses accordingly.

Could it be possible that this was graded by Mike Baker who is generally accepted as the "best grader in the business"? It actually may be a GAI 8.5.

The low certification number is a sure sign that the current management at PSA did not have a lot to do with this grade. But I do agree that cards like this should be taken out of circulation by PSA. It is just good for their bottom line.
  • The low number doesn't directly coorelate with when it was graded; I know that the certain font used can narrow down when the card was graded but cert numbers are practically useless is figuring out when a card was graded.

If my calculations are correct this is the 130 card carded by PSA so yes its an old one?
    00000001 = Wagner
01000001= 34 Goudey Gehrig which I believe to be the second card through the door?
Then it goes to 01000099 which is a Desert Shield Griffey then it stops and I am guessing the next group is
02000001 which would be #101 = 52 Topps Lou Kretlow then to this Clemente?
    Purely a guess ?

I think that PSA's early grades shouldn't be sitting around like museum curiositys, "oh here is an example from the early days of grading, you can see centering didn't matter that much back then." If they have made mistakes in the past they should just rectify the situation. The point of all this grading was that you should be able to have some consistency between grades. I don't think it is just early grading that has this problem. PSA should just fix this behind the scenes as they will never take cards back unless they are horribly wrong IE, trimmed, fake, recolored, missing paper, creases on high grade cards.

  • Hey Southern You should keep your trap shut as there are many SGC 88s out there with equal or worse centering.

Hell, I had an SGC 92 [and this was after the split grades, so it was 8.5, too], that upon cracking and submitting to PSA came back as PSA 8 o/c. And it deserved that grade....

It's too early to be a WIWAG. They did away with that font well before that went down.
