A 1924 Peace with color.

Some of you may recall that a few months back I ran across a 1924 Peace that had unusual coloration. The coin was housed in a Dansco (a complete set) and owned by a friend (non-collector) whose father bought it from Paramount in 1979 (if memory serves). This one (AU-something) was unique with respect to coloration. I pulled it out last night and took some additional pics to try and capture the colors and am resonably satisfied with the results. Thought I would post it again and let you view the latest results. The neon pink and green don't do much for me - but the rainbow in the crown is stunning. This is a great example of the effect of angle and light (natural) on the finished photo.

  • I like it but it looks a little suspicious

I understand your comment. If I didn't know something of its history I too might think it AT. However, knowing something of its history I can't see it being done intentionally. I do admit to thinking that the coloration is pretty unusual and not foreign to AT'ed coins. What grabs me about the piece is the color associated with the crown.

I don't know, it looks like it was dipped in something and not rinsed fully. What's with all the pitting, especially on the reverse? I see evidence of harsh cleaning on the obverse as well. Are you sure the story of the coin's past is solid?

Robert - I pulled it out of the Dansco myself, traded it for a nice BU 1924. I also saw the receipt from Paramount dated 1979. What the coin's life was like prior to 1979, I have not a clue.

  • The Dansco albums turned many of coin. Many Peace dollar sets you buy in them have a coin or two with this same iridescent hue. Likely cleaned in a previous life.
