1985 Topps Mini's

Has anyone heard of these? I was told they were only a test and never mass produced. Any insight?

Not mass produced. Rumored to be about 100 sets total with 15% of them being blank backed and 85% being stat backed. My guess would be that there are closer to 200 sets. Most likely they came out the back door of the printing plant after having been lifted from the trash can. Quite a few players are found with minor to severe creasing. My guess is those cards were in the center of the sheet and tended to get bent as the sheets were thrown away.

132 cards total in set. Most expensive cards are Ryan and Schmidt. Stat backed cards often have problems with red ink bleed (smearing). PSA grades them. No packs.

I have also noticed some severe register problems with the Schmidt cards [e.g. they appear very much out of focus because of the way the various colors were added]

That's very interesting. I have a Bill Buckner that's graded a PSA 9 - it's very sweet. I didn't know the story behind the set. Thanks for sharing.

Schmidt is not the only one with register problems. My Bill Russell is the same way.

  • So what is your take on price versus value? I only need one card in a group of four.

There is alot of value to these cards. I will add the following to Bob's post, they are/were a test issue at the OPC plant to try out new cutting machines/techniques. I believe this to be true, if you look at from 85 OPC Hockey and Baseball to they closed they are found much sharper cut then previous years?

I know of some people that do. A set is 'complete' at something like 132 cards - it was not the full set that was produced in mini format.
