1933 Goudey - Lajoie Card on EBAY?

There is a #106 card listed for sale on EBAY. Looks like the auction ends around 11 Eastern time. I'm not sure what PSA means by "noholder?" Is this legit? Here's the link.

Link to EBAY

I see that the seller's feedback is 1.

"no holder" in this case means "not authentic".

If that was a real card it wouldn't be on ebay, I have one of the same reprints. Ask him for a scan of the back with today's newspaper as a background.

Bids up over $1000 on it. There are some real suckers on e-bay. And people complain that there are so many con artists on e-bay? Look at this auction and you have all you need to know.

    Hello & Welcome:

You will be bidding on a 1933 Goudey, Napoleon Lajoie.

Card is graded by PSA but says no holder Card #106.

<<< Like all my cards this is in excellent shape. Real sharp corners and excellent color. This is a card that was not made by Goudey in 1933. They made 240 cards in that year and left out card 106. Well here it is.

Collectors that collected these cards complained about not finding card #106. To satisfy these complaints. Goudey printed a #106 Napoleon Lajoie, and it was only supplied by special request. This card was distributed in very limited quanities.

All those words come from the back of the card.

Excellent card to add to any collection. >>>

No question in my mind this seller knew it was a reprint before he sent in the card, and had this scam prepared to go when receiving the card back. Yes, this auction should definitely be pulled by ebay.

  • there are really only a couple of different bidders...could be friends helping him out hoping to get someone else invloved
  • I've received a PSA "NO HOLDER" recently on a badly chewed up Ruth strip card. I trimmed the oversize borders, resubmitted and it finally got slabbed. In this case, the card had too much white border to fit within.

I suspect this reject Cardsaver _once_ contained a legit and badly beaten Lajoie but no longer. I wouldn't touch this card with YOUR Paypal acct.

I just spent two minutes trying to contact EBAY to get the item removed and could not find the link. How confusing can it be to report it? Link anyone?

    Griffins,
Please excuse my ignorance, but what is the VERO program?

    Thanks,
    Mark
  • Why wouldn't PSA just list it as questionable authenticity. When you verify the cert it says "Not holdered, No holder available." What is a newbie supposed to think. Seems ridiculous to me that they are not specific as to why they rejected it. image

  • If the auction is still running the report button is on the bottom of the auction listing. If closed the report button is removed.

I too blame PSA as much as the seller here. They should print the slip as saying not authentic or something similar.

PSA as far as I know is not a member of the VERO program. To those who asked the VERO program is a group of manufacturers who have the power to pull auctions of their items they believe are fake. Chanel is a member as is Tiffany. They have in many cases abused their power. Ebay member Tabberone has successfully sued several VERO members for wrongdoing. Many of these companies has rules preventing their distributers from selling on Ebay and when they do appear on Ebay they get them pulled. There is a thing called first sale doctrine though that basically says once you legally buy an item it is yours to do what you want with it.

there cannot really be $1500 in legit bids on that card... can there???

1 feedback seller, card is raw, the other 5 cards he has pictured are crap, he even says in the description all the stuff about the lajoie card is printed on the back of the card...

    am I missing something here?

I asked the seller "Is this card a reprint?"

    His responce....

"Everyone has been asking me. I do not know because it does not say reprint. Sent out to PSA and came back that way. All wording in auction came from back of card.
    Thanks"

I just checked the cert numbers and it said this:

    CARD INFORMATION
    Year: 1933
    Brand: GOUDEY
    Player: NAPOLEON LAJOIE
    Variety: N/A
Grade: Not Holdered, No Holder Available

If it was a reprint wouldnt it state the year it was reprinted instead of 1933?

41 minutes to go and this auction is still up. Ebay should be ashamed of themselves.

Is it me or does the card look like it was spliced together? There seems to be a line running across the top of the card and the background color is very different above and below that "sticker" point. Why anyone would bid more than $1,600 on this auction is beyond me. And ebay pulls auction because of the 1/1 title. Give me a freakin' break! No wonder ebay's stock is plummeting these days!
