Does size matter?

I received today several 1978 Topps football cards all PSA graded from various auctions by the same seller. Seeing them in person, it immediately struck me that they looked a tad short. I brought out some cards from my existing collection and did side-by-side comparisons like the one below. I got pretty much the same result no matter what card I chose in comparison of the "new" cards to the "old" ones. Does anyone else see a significant height difference here, and, if so, do you think this kind of variation exists naturally in the wild?

Do those cards have a cert that starts with the numbers 815?

    No, they don't.

I see both a height and a width difference. The card this is shorter also appears to be wider. Not sure what it means.

Could you measure the smaller card?

The smaller card is 1/32 of an inch shy of 3 1/2 inches tall, and is 2 1/2 inches wide. Both cards shown are the same width; one is just slid further over in the holder. The card on the right is exactly 3 1/2 x 2 1/2.
