I plunged into MS Roosies yesterday and spent time inspecting/upgrading them last night.

I went to the Fremont, Cal. show yesterday and bought nothing. However, on the way home I stopped by a local shop and saw a Capital holder filled with 48 MS Silver Roosies. I looked at the coins, asked the dealer how much, was told $100.00 and bought it.

Looking at the set more closely I discovered that the Capital Holder box the set was in and the tissue insert had yellowed. Instead of being bright white, time has yellowed the box and the tissue. Further, the Capital Holder itself (8 rows of 7 holes each with a white inner core with gold embossing for the dates and the "Roosevelt Dimes" title) shows that it was made prior to 1965. I come to this conclusion because in addition to the 48 holes for the 48 silver coins from 1946-64, there are 8 additional holes for 1965 through 1968. Covering only four years, these 8 additonal holes are embossed 1956, 1965D, 1966, 1966D, 1967, 1967D, 1968 and 1968D. The embossing of holes with 1965, 66 and 67 D's leads me to believe that the holder was made prior to 1965.

In addition to the yellowed box, yellowed tissue and the pre 1965 manufacture of the holder itself, the coins themselves lead me to believe that the person who put the set together put them together in the SF Bay Area from circulation in the year of issue or from individual purchases decades ago.

Most of the coins are MS, though the 46D, 47P, 50D, 52P and 61P are sliders. Many of the other coins, particularly the S mint coins, have booming luster and great original skin. The strikes run from ok to very strong and sharp.

Last night I pulled out some other Roosies I have and upgraded a few of the coins. I replaced the slider 50D with an MS 50D that has a repuched mintmark. I also took out the 2 1964 coins that were white and replaced them with toned coins. For the 8 clad wholes, I filled them with MS coins, including for the 1965, 66 and 67 D holes, SMS examples with CAM contrast.

The set is complete and looks nice IMHO. It will compliment my 1950-64 Silver CAM/DCAM proofs in a Capital Holder.

I have no idea what the nice silver MS Roosies are worth. I have no idea if any of the coins would be considered "full bands" or "full torch". Bottom line is that they looked nice and for $100.00 I could not pass it up.

Any thoughts or comments about my new acquistion from Roosie fans will be appreciated. Thanks, SanctionII

That holder, new, from Cap Plastics is about $45.00-- it sounds like a GREAT set. Nice unc Roosies are readily available for really cheap prices, you should be able to spend $20.00 and weed out the last of the coins you might not like, but considering it sounds like this is an old-time original set, I'd leave it alone. I have the same set and it looks great.

It sounds like a great buy. I think that $100 might be high for a raw put together set of Roosies from years ago in an album, but since you were able to see the coins in hand and see that the coins have great skin and tons of luster, then it may be a steal.

Any FB's in the mix? I'm sure there are a few!

Stooge, as far as full bands go, I am not familiar with same and thus myopinion is worth aquat. However, your picture in your reply showing full bands (top and bottom) is very useful as a guide. With your picutre in mind, I looked at the coins and it appears that the following coins have full bands (at least I can see a complete line across the lower and upper bands all the way across the torch): 47S, 48P,D&S, 49D, 50D, 51D, 52S, 53D, 54D&S, 55D&S, 59P and 61D. 15 out of the 48 silver dimes may have enough to be "Full band".

If my eyes are accurate and the above coins are FB, are any of them of great rarity and/or value?

I could echo the above but will not. I think you did just fine with the purchase.

Ken, the plan is to keep the coins in the Capital Holder at this time and upgrade the sliders to MS examples. If I sell the set, I will remove them from the Capital holder and keep it for future use.

TTT, anyone else care to give free information on MS silver Roosies?

If you were to send in any of those FB coins you found and possibly make a few 66FB's or a 7FB, it will pay for the whole lot.

As far as the Silver Roosie brains of the bunch here, I would contact Onlyroosies, Wondercoin, Colorfulcoins, and Rainbowroosies. These "4 Horsemen" are absolutely the most knowledable of any gents on these boards!

Do some Roosie searches and read. Look at some pictures and read some more. Lots of good Roosie stuff man!

The more I think of it, the more I believe you made a GREAT deal.

Stooge, the $100.00 I spent on the dimes was money I had planned on spending at the Fremont, Cal. show yesterday but did not. Discretionary coin funds only, so even if I over paid for the dimes, no biggie cuz the total outlay is modest.

The thing that struck me was how nice and original some of the dimes look. Great luster, thick original skin, great eye appeal.

The set compliments the silver Roosie CAM proofs I have and also compliments the Whitman folder of circulated Roosies I pulled out of change in the early 60's at 7 years of age. My dad gave me a Whitman Roosie album in 1963 and that started me on collecting. It also compliments the clad Roosie collection I have been assembling from pocket change since the late 60's.

    Thanks everyone for your comments.
