Do Top Pops With Minor Mint Errors Bring Any Premium?

Would a top pop coin valued at around $160 (NGC holder) bring any premium at all if it has been struck through thread on the reverse? I was thinking that it would probably only bring a slight premium, since the value of the top pop far excedes the value of a minor struck through thread. The only thing is that a top pop coin with a strike through might be a bit of a rarity, and some collectors may find such an example desirable. Any opinions based on past auctions or even speculations would be appreciated.

I collect Ike errors and error quarters 65-99 and look for high-grade and Top Pops.
My quarter set has (4) Top-Pops with pretty substantial errors...35%, 40% and 50% Off centers.
They are in the NGC Registry Signature Sets and even with substantial errors, I found that
they bring very little premiums and somtimes are priced even lower than a "regular" coin!image
I don't know why, and it doesn't make any sense to me.......so, I buy it!image
Maybe some day they will bring a premium?!

In my experience, a pop top coin with a mint error wll sell for less than an example without the error.

It makes sense to me - while mint errors may be rare, and they may be interesting, the registry minset (at least among those buying pop top coins) is about finding the most pristine, perfect examples of each coin possible. As such, a mint error is more of a distraction than a plus.

imageTop pop collectors want perfection and a mint error isn't perfection.

  • When I sold this 1960 small/large date in PCGS PF67CAM. I was afraid the small strikr thru
would hurt the price. I think it had no effect.
