<< <i>I'd bodybag it for damage, in front of the nose.
Assuming it would grade however, I'd say MS62 because of a super soft strike, or AU55. I'd assume it's unc though and we're just seeing strike issues. >>
Robert, I know you are good at these. I would absolutely grade it at 62 without the rim damage. What would you discount the grade or value with it, if any? This coin gets very pricey above 63, so this date/mm is desirable for collectors in a grade between 50-62. This is merely a hypothetical question. I own the coin and it's not being offered for sale, just for discussion.

Well, my guess is that a service like NCS or ANACS would net it to MS60, and it would likely trade for AU55 money. You might want to try to get PCGS to grade it though. There's a reason this issue rises exponentially in value in the higher grades, that is because it is usually found softly stuck, which heavily impacts the grade. PCGS well may grade it, as the rim damage is not excessive. They may well bag it too though.
This is a very interesting coin. The rim nick is fairly substantial, but what's interesting is the erosion on the obverse rim from 3:00 to 8:00. I'd grade it 58, but this coin might market grade 61.
Interesting and thoughtful replies. The coin is most certainly not whizzed.
I bought this coin eight years ago, when I knew even less than I know know about this series. My local dealer was "educating" me.
I'm fascinated by all of the different influences on grading in the series. This coin offers lots to talk about when educating collectors on the series. That's the main reason I posted it.

Ed - Normally I'd agree. But as you know, this date frequently comes with proof like surfaces which often give them an an almost unnatural look.

Remember, unless you have the world's smallest monitor, you're seeing a greatly magnified image.

Just expressing my opinion--you can take it or leave it, as you please.
I thought I was among the "interesting and thoughtful replies."
