Heavy Rock ? ? ?, Meteorite ? ? ?

While picking up railway coins ( kids put the coin on rail tracks to get run over) I got a hit on this rock. I kept dumping my scoop looking for the coin (nickel) I thought I had pinpointed.

When I picked up this one rock I thought it was heavy. I did a little web searching.

I think it is an meteorite. It does attract a small magnet.

    It could be, but if you were on railroad tracks they used to use the burnt refuse from the steel
    mills where I lived. You may have just found what we used to call a "clinker".

    If it attracts a magnet, it must have iron in it, right? If you can find someone that has lapidary
    tools they could slice a piece off. If it is a iron meteorite you should see some nifty crystal
    like patterns in the piece.

    This thing is HEAVY. Heaver than the rocks I found with it.
    I will try to find a local rock hound. :-)

    Look to the bottom right of your post= The word "Edit" should be there. You can only edit your post.

    Hi,

    CROCKofCOINS' find sure does have the look of a meteorite. The flat side and beeing found by railroad tracks makes me wonder but you should really get this checked out.

    konsole's looks layered. From what I've read, meteorites aren't normally layered. Since it's magnetic though it's still worth getting checked out. I'm not an expert! image

    They're both cool rocks. And as I said I'm not an expert. Do tell if you find anything out! image

    could it just be a junk of iron ore? that stuff falls off the trains all the time around here.
