Strange banking error and a free $800 coin - maybe

Back in early April of this year I bought a 1787 Fugio Cent and paid nearly $800. The dealer offered a 2.5% discount for cash or personal check - so I sent a check. I got an email saying they received the check and the coin would be mailed in 10 days. About 7 days later I received another email saying the coin had been sent. The coin arrived and was just as advertised. However, my check had not cleared my bank. About the second week in May the check still had not cleared and I called the dealer to tell them. I spoke with a young lady and told her about the problem. In a few minutes she came back and read me the check number and said it had been deposited the day after it was received. They had not received a charge back and as far as they knew the check had cleared.

About two weeks later I called my bank to see if they could shed any light on the missing check. I was kind of surprised by the ho-hum response I received. After being transfered around I spoke with someone in the auditing department. They told me that while this sort of thing was unusuall it was not unheard of. Sometimes checks were posted to the wrong account and it might be months before the error was discovered - if ever. Some people never balance their checking account. Other times a whole bundle of checks would be lost or stolen and again it might be months before everything could be reconstructed - if ever.

It's now the end of July and the check still has not cleared. Maybe it will show up next month or next year or maybe I have a freebe.

I purchased another coin from the same dealer the first of this month. I talked to them on the phone and asked about the uncleared check again. They still said they didn't have a charge back and as far as they knew everything was OK.
Who is General Failure, and why is he reading my hard drive?

  • You've already done more than most people would have by asking a second time. Let it go.

Someone with the same name as you is currently cussing at a bank manager as to why his checking account is $800 short.
