How would you go about selling a 1799 large cent?

A friend of mine just showed me his large cent set. In it is a 1799 normal date large cent that I would describe as XF details, porous surfaces, net VF20. The porosity, which isn't really obvious until it is viewed with a glass, appears to have been in the planchet when struck as the coin has a very pleasing overall medium brown color. I advised him to send the coin into ANACS, mostly for purposes of authenticity, as I'm sure PCGS or NGC would body bag it for porosity. (The coin appears to be genuine.)

How would you recommend selling this coin in today's market? Any thoughts on valuation?

All glory is fleeting.

    Auction . . . . .

Heritage, ANR, etc. You can always try NGC . . .then send to NCS if it really won't slab.

Price??? Well . . .in this market, anything high is possible . . .but if the object is to sell . . .sell soon.

  • It seems odd, but my friend and looked at a 1798 Large Cent in very much the same kind of condition as your friends. I think that my friend will end up with this one, as he is very big on copper.image

This coin needs to be sent to a major auction firm. I owned a PCGS 1799 Large cent in Fine, and could not find buyers locally, or even at a significant sized regional convention. I dont like cosigning coins to firms if I can market them succesfully and put more $ in my poket, but on a coin such as this, it may be the best venue. The only other option is to contact a Large cent specialist dealer and see if they can help, however, be careful as I recieved some pretty lowball dealer offers when I showed them my coin. One copper dealer in particular offer me something like 3000.00 (it was a pure insult) It sold for 4x that !!

I'd send it to PCGS. A little porosity is no big deal on a 99 cent.

I know dealers who would just buy such a coin to put away for themselves. An auction may not be the only good route. Having an inside dealer market this for you at a major convention is another possibility. They are very much in demand if problems are minor.

  • I'd talk to Heritage, see what kind of arrangement you can strike.
