Does anyone know the Mint's Tolerance Range for 1945 Walking Liberty Half Dollars?

RampageRampage Posts: 9,496 ✭✭✭✭✭
The normal weight should be 12.5 grams and the diameter should be 30.6 mm. The one I have has the weight of 11.4 grams and diameter of 29.5 mm, is that coin within the limits?

Thanks, Richard.

    Weight: 12.50 grams +/- .250 grams
    192.904 grains +/- 1.50 grains

I don't have the diameter tolerance but it's usually VERY small. A full millimeter seems like a lot.

I'm sorry Rampage but I didn't see your question until 4AM while I was at work and I don't have the tolerances memorized. image

According to my reference the weight tolerances Mwallace gave you are wrong. I have 12.5 grams +/- .097 grams or 192.904 grains +/- 1.5 grains

His grains tolerance is right but the gram tolerance is the standard for the 1948 - 1964 halves. (except I show +/- .259 grams)

I don't have official tolerance figures for the diameter but they were very tight, usually no more than about 5 thousandths of an inch. My reference shows a diameter of 30.61 mm. That .01 mm difference probably represents the tolerance.

So your coin is WAY outside the allowable tolerances.

Thanks Conder101. You are correct. As I moved across the table I must've inadvertently moved down a line.

What is a good reference to find out these numbers? I would not want to keep asking these questions as I do not want to appear as if I am taking advantage of someone's knowledge. Is there a good book or webpage out there?

    Thanks, Richard.

PS--I am asking because I have a 1945 Walker in AU that has the measurements I described above. I sent it to ANACS, but they claim it is within the tolerance levels. It did not seem right to me.

    Does this help?

From “Renaissance of American Coinage 1905-1908” p.148:

“As a result of the internal discussions [in 1908], the mint settled on specific diameters and ‘standard’ thickness of all circulating coins. These are presented in the table below:
[The table gets mangled by the board's word formatting]

    Half dollar
    Diameter 1.205 in. 30.61mm
    Thickness 0.0825 in. 2.096mm

“The tolerance in diameter was settled at + / - 0.0025-inch, and thickness measured at the rim of + / - 0.020-inch per pile of twenty coins ( + / - 0.001-inch per coin).”

It doesn't have the diameter tolerances but for weight tolerances I use the Coin World Almanac. If you are a subscriber to any of the Amos Press periodicals you can get an acount on their Amos Advantage site and buy a hard bound copy of the 1994 edition for $5. (Don't get the 2000 Millennium edition, it is nowhere near as good.) The book is also FULL of other great information. The CWA is one of the first books I reach for when I'm trying to answer a question that I don't already know the answer to. I like them so much I have all of the editions and most of them in multiple copies. (Because the paperback volumes fall apart quickly with frequent use.) If you can find a hardbound copy get that. So far I have only seen the 1984 an 1994 editions in hardbound, and the 84 was a presentation copy given to one of the contributors and signed by all the Coin World staff. It's part of my library now.
