Found Minnesota extra tree in unopened 2005 mint set ... (pics added)

well, it was unopened until today. Much to my surprise needless to say. This is a scan, center of the extra tree shows up dark in the scan.

  • Congrat! This is a very nice find, I picked yp 10 rolls of uncirculated State Quarter rolls this week and nothing.
Keez, I am very happy for you and it is good to know there is still hope.

Thanks everyone. I was bummed out with the subscription 2006 uncirc set. After ordering 2 more 2006 sets today in hopes of getting clean ones, I decided to organize mint sets and found the 2005 I had stashed away unopened, as I had been considering selling it unopened. Today I decided I would open it. WOW, that made my day!

I've never sent anything in to be certified as I'm new to collecting. Should this be sent in or kept in the mint set package.

I was looking for pics on other threads but they are all show up as red x now.

I guess there are different looks to them, would like to know which one mine is.

It definitely is an extra tree -- but looks a bit different.

Scan isn't showing the middle section very well. Also, mine has more to it on the lower section than the variety example shows.

I've heard that there are 3 varieties. Maybe this is one?

Mine has more body to it than the example posted. Uploading more scans shortly.

What's this about an extra tree? I haven't heard of that before.

Bumping this up for the evening extra tree error experts. The red x pics from other posts are viewable now and mine is most similar to the 001 variety, yet different from it. Mine has more body to the tree, less skeleton looking. It's definitely not like the 002 or 003 varieties I saw from other threads posted on this forum.

    I would have to agree.

Cool, maybe it is one of those other varieties that someone said Ken Potter was going to mention in his next Article.
  • keezkeez Posts: 842
    It must be another variety.

There are apparently several different "extra tree" doubled dies. And this seems to be yet another. Send it on to Ken Potter.

Last I heard it was up to four doubled dies, though only three of them show an extra tree. Could be another 1972 outburst.

Personally, I'd keep it in its original packaging, at least for now but that's just me. I'm sure there are some who would pay a premium to buy one of these in the Mint celo, and we've seen what some have realized on ebay, raw.

Follow-up: package is on its way to Ken P intact in the mint packaging. Will let you know when I hear if it is actually a 4th variety. Perhaps the ones in the uncirculated mint sets are different than the others that are not from mint sets.

I just checked my mint sets and found three like this:

How many types are there anyway and can someone provide pictures?

Edited to add: And no the photo was not reversed!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Perhaps they have re-instituted the daily ration of rum issued in the 1790's.......

Update: My Mint set, satin finish Minnesota P quarter is a variety 4 and is very nicely photographed on Ken Potter's site and on the Numismatic News site that is linked to from his site.

    Thanks for the update.

It's also nice to see that they are trying to all list these with the same numbers in each cataloging system.
