von Blucher Leaves the ANA
COLORADO SPRINGS - Sheryl von Blucher, chief operations officer at the American Numismatic Association, has left the organization as of July 26, 2006, and is no longer employed by the ANA.
von Blucher joined the ANA as its chief program and financial officer in April 2005 and was promoted to chief operations officer in September 2005. She was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the nonprofit organization.
"It became clear that Sheryl's corporate mindset and experience was not going to be a good fit for the long-term success of a nonprofit, membership-based organization," said ANA Executive Director Chris Cipoletti.
Cipoletti said that nonprofit membership-based associations operate on behalf of their members, and that decisions are based on a combination of membership needs and financial responsibility. Corporate models, however, often dictate that decisions are based strictly on the bottom line.
There are no plans to replace von Blucher. Senior staff will assume additional responsibilities in managing the strategic plan and will be given more authority in day-to-day functions. Cipoletti will assume many of von Blucher's supervisory and overall operational responsibilities.
The American Numismatic Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and encouraging people to study and collect money and related items. With nearly 33,000 members, the Association serves the collecting and academic communities and the general public with an interest in numismatics. The ANA helps people discover and explore the world of money through its vast array of programs including its education and outreach, museum, library, publications, conventions and seminars. (And I notice this doesn't have the nice ring that the usual, "Departing to pursue other opportunities", announcements usually have).
Edited to add---I forgot to add that IMO things need to go a little bit further to get the ANA fully back on track but I remember what my dear old mom told me when I was growing up, "If you don't have anything good to say about people then its better to not say anything at all!"

These are relatively harsh words for a nonprofit to use in explaining the departure of a high-level employee. Usually, the organization just damns the departed with faint praise.

So....does thinking like Marty mean anything? Better talk to your shrink.
<< <i>So, how many hats is Cipoletti wearing now?

What they are saying is: Fired for incomptence.
I guess she didn't leave under happy circumstances so they didn't want to sugarcoat it.
I agree with you. I let my membership lapse after the last fiasco that IMO was caused by overbearing leadership. When nobody can get along with the guy at the top, you gotta wonder whats wrong with the guy at the top. I mean, who brought her onboard in April 2005? Did they not know her background when she came in. Did she all of a sudden get stupid in the 12 months since? It's embarrasing that the hobby's main association is in this much disarray.

<< <i>Too bad. I was hoping to see Cipoletti's resignation. >>
I agree. But wait until the latter part of summer 2007 when, hopefully, the entire ANA board, is gone. We'll get our wish!

Which is why, as I have been saying over and over again, that in 2007, that we, the concerned members of the American Numismatic Association, need to "throw the bums out" and push for the removal of the executive director.

I beleive that there are a lot of sick and twisted people on this board - I thought the same thing too.
<< <i>I thought I worked in an aggressive work environment... I would get chewed up and spit out if I worked for the ANA. >>
Well, if we get more of this in the press, then it can be used against the ANA. I'd love to hear Ms. von Blucher's side of the story but I would not be suprised that Cipoletti would get her on something.....slander maybe?

Marty Feldman??????
> a nice parting shot.
My sentiments also. This reflects poorly on Cipoletti. The least they could have done was the usual they've left to pursue other opportunities and we wish them well.

I met her while there, and she seemed to be a rather nice lady, although somewhat - ermm - headstrong...about what she was and was not going to do. That doesn't jive well with a member driven organization where the staff is employed solely to cater to the best interest of the members.
