Need advice! remove rust from 194? steel penny

I just got a 194? steel penny, but I need to remove some rust to get a clearer ID of what I have. Does anyone have a safe suggestion for cleaning this coin. It was attracted to the magnet. Does it still have any value above face value?
Thank you. I thought it was a rare find, but I am probably wrong considering the condition.

it's a 1943 and there is no removing it without it looking really bad

The official year is 1943. There are several fake 1944 "steel" cents out there - just surf flea-bay. But it is a valuable error coin if genuine. I don;t know of any way to restore rusted steel cents, other than guessing a several week bath in olive oil. Anybody ever try gun cleaning products on steel cents, such as Break Free?

Vinegar will work but it may leave pitting on the steel... The rust comes off and floats to the top, but there most likely be "scars" from where the rust once was.

  • Will vinegar work on copper, also?

It's good to neutralize any corrosion... But don't leave it on long at all.

i never tried vinagar on copper but vinagar is acidic, it will probably change the color of the copper and end up looking "dipped". i would use acetone or olive oil on copper. vinagar should be ok on steel. hope this helps.

  • I set this coin in vinagur overnight, but it just took off enough to see the complete date, but if there is a Mint Mark I cannot see it. The date is 1943.
  • 194? steel cents where you can't tell what the ? is aren't rare. You could try some Naval Jelly, but it most likely will look worse when you're done than it does now.
What do you think, Mr. Bigglesworth?
