1871-CC Seated Liberty Dollar - Fake ?

dcarrdcarr Posts: 9,175 ✭✭✭✭✭
eBay 1871-CC Seated Liberty dollar.

This coin may look genuine in the images, but I think it is fake, which will not be good news for the high bidder currently over $1,200.
The "CC" mint mark does not appear to have the correct placement or style for a genuine 1871-CC dollar (only one reverse die used for these ?). And in addition it appears to have slightly porous surfaces (possible casting ?). But it may be a genuine (Philadelphia) coin with added mint mark.

What do you think ?

I agree the CC looks wierd, like sharper than the rest of the coin. But I really don't know much about this series.

Anybody that would bid that much on a ungraded coin on Ebay is crazy.

    TDN proves it's a fake.

The mintmark is placed well enough that the creator probably looked at a genuine example, or at least a picture of one. But the letter styling of the mintmark is way off.

Was there only one reverse die used in 1871?

What is it about dollar collectors that leads them to bid on this kind of stuff?

The seller never states that it is a CC - just a rare seated Liberty Dollar. Is this an out for him when the buyer realizes it is a fake?

That is not an out, as the coin is not a genuine example of that which is depicted.

Just playing devils advocate - it is "probably" a genuine seated dollar. That is all he claimed it to be.

I was at a gun show in Mesa a few months back where an individual traded off about a dozen or so "Seated Lib" dollars to one of the dealers at the show. Apparently he hung around a little too long after the transaction and said dealer confronted him in the lobby. I'm suprised anyone buys raw Seated or Trade Dollars any more.

BTW...$4500+ is a pretty hard lesson to learn...if in fact the sale goes through...
