Indian Head collectors... whats more appealing?

What would be more apppealing? A nice reddish brown(more red than brown) with blue & purple rainbow toning on the edges, or a full red cent? Just wondering because I am buying a present for someone. i saw a really nice 1909 with that type of toning. The person I am buying it for just started his reg set.

If he decided to get the cent graded, (i personally think its about an ms63) wouldnt he not get such a good grade because it isnt a rull blazing red?

The reddish-brown one, I think. 63RB is a fine grade. I like full red cents too, but they are more expensive. I also think that old coins should look old.

I'm skeptical of "blue & purple rainbow toning" these days as being AT. It's a fairly rare set of environmental circumstances that have to come together to produce that sort of toning and I'm seeing it way too much these days. If these are the only options, I'd opt for the MS63RD cent.

I am defeinately not an expert at AT, but it is ever so slight. You need to tilt the coin a certain way to see it. If it were artificial I would think that it would be more prominant and brighter?

Colorful RB coins are possibly more appealing to me than full RD coins, but it really depends on the particular coins involved.

I'm afraid to buy full red coins. I just feel like as soon as I buy them, they'd begin to turn.

On average, full red copper is more likely to be doctored --- go with reddish brown, blue & purple.

Hmmmmm..... If I had my "druthers" I prefer naturally toned chocolate brown coppers [but THIS color can be doctored as well I suppose]. I guess I'm skeptical after a recent thread about blue/purple toned IHCs [I think it was coinguy1s' thread..I'll try to search again for it] and I've been burned more than once by "MS" coins that have been dipped to appear RD...so I'm skeptical of both actually but I guess I'm better at detecting doctored BR coins than other AT... image

  • I much prefer RB rather than full red cents.
What do you think, Mr. Bigglesworth?

  • Here's the recent thread about AT indian heads: link

Personally, since I don't know copper, I would hesitate to buy an expensive IHC raw unless I knew and trusted the seller.
