Just back from PCGS 2006-D Experimental Rinse Sac (beware "Modern Crap")

KaelasdadKaelasdad Posts: 1,232 ✭✭✭
Earlier this year, I bought a few rolls of Sacs from the mint as soon as they were available, and right away noticed something odd. The end roll coin from the Denver mint roll was a strange color and had some odd "hits" on the rims. I kept it in the roll for the longest i could, then temptation got the better of me, as i was thinking what does the other side look like, and are there more in there. Well, I opened the roll, and this was the only one of its kind there. I was able to see Fred Weiberg in Long Beach in June and he classified it as an experimetal rinse, but the first from Denver he had seen and the first from 2006.

Well off to PCGS it went, and today it came back. Funny thing is, the slab has an error too, lol

I hate that. I uploaded them to snapfish.com, but i guess i have to go to my other computer and resave them. Sorry. (although they do seem to come up if you look at the properties info and cut and paste), but i will still try to get them here.

Thank you, the thing that I dont understand is why. Why are they using a rinse in 2006 when most everyone thinks the coin is on its way out? Why Denver? And why just one? Its Almost August, and I got this in the very first shipments in 2006. I just got lucky really, as it was on the end, had it been inside, it would still be sitting unopened in its roll. Odd

The coin isn't on its way out yet. Presidential dollar bill keeps it around as well I believe.
The experimental rinse "anti-tarnishing" makes sense since part of the stated reason for the dislike of the Sacs is the way they tarnish ugly.
They knew they had to use basically the same composition for the presidential dollars as for the sacs so they were experimenting early.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I am wondering if this coin is not something left over from 2001. In other words, when the mint produced these in 2001, maybe they had some blanks left over and decided to strike them in 2006. It would be interesting to see how many exist for 2006.

    Congratulations on the find.

Much thanks to Mike for taking the time to add the 2006-D to his site. I have been reading up on the information he has collected for quite some time, and it was a total surprise, and a great honor to be included. I showed my daughter, and she was....less than overwhelmed, but now if I had discovered a new type of horse, now thats a different story. Mike has also suggested that the find be reported in Coin World, and he volunteered to submit on my behalf.

I have had dealings with quite a few forum members here, and I am truly impressed by the quality, the ethics, and the comraderie (with some exceptions).

I have never regretted joining the board, and look forward to future conversations and deals.

    Thanks, Russ
