just got my first "rattler" PCGS slab

Not particularly impressed. It appears to be correctly graded, not undergraded as I hear many are.

I don't like the fact that it won't stack with the other slabs. Maybe I'll get it reholdered.

The coin is pretty nice all the same.

Many of the "overgraded" 1st gen. slabs have already been cracked out and resubmitted.

Personally..I dont like them either, and will only buy them if I can see the coin in hand and it looks extremly PQ.

Its neat to have at least one thoughl.

The rattler legend has been around so long that 99.9% of the ones that had undergraded coins in them have already been cracked out and resubmitted. The VAST majoriy of coins still in rattlers are either accurately graded or over graded. There are probably a few gems out there waiting to be discovered but they are few and far between to say the least.
  • I paid up (slightly) for a rattler once based on the upgrade hype. Now I believe it when the folks here on the boards say that most of the upgradeable rattlers have already upgraded.

Nice looking 84-CC though. Congrats on the pick up.

I agree that they don't stack very well but very nice plastic to take pictures through.
  • I hate the old Clacker holders. the coins spin in them and as you stated they dont stack or fit in the blue box worth a hoot

I recently bought a 1900 $20 Liberty in a rattler slab - MS60. I paid about 10% over spot for it back when gold was under $600. The coin is correctly graded more or less - definately not a 63 which is where the price strike is. HOWEVER, the coin is far more enjoyable than any 60-62 I have ever seen. Yes it has an even smattering of hits, but it also has nice orangish original surfaces, a beautiful crisp strike, and vaguely prooflike fields with frosty devices - best of all, it does not have a big ugly smeer on the cheek.

The old PCGS rattlers fit just fine in a first generation PCGS storage box. If you look around a bit or even post for one here, I'll bet one will come around. MAYBE even mineimage
