REALLY Putting Things Into Perspective

Dear Group,
We all hear stories about attempts to convince/justify purchasing a piece of card board for thousands or tens of thousands of dollars. I'm sure to a certain extent, some of these stories are true and some are untrue. But after reading this story about a Gustav Klimt painting selling for $135 million, we can really see how insignificant the world of sports memorabilia/collecting can be. Here's the link to a story detailing the sale of a Gustav Klimt painting entitled, "Adele Bloch-Bauer I" for $135 million to Ronald S. Lauder:

Article Re: $135 Million Painting

Really, in terms of sports memorabilia, what can $135 million purchase? This is only pure speculation, but I'm guessing every single highest rated set on the registry or maybe you can spend just 10% of the $135 million and buy every single lot at the next Mastro auction. This reminds of a friend telling me that at the height of his wealth at over $100 billion, Bill Gates could purchase (if for sale) all of pro sports, e.g. every team in the NFL, MLB, NBA and MLB.

Of course, AROD has that $252 million contract OVER TEN YEARS. Richard Fairbank of Capital One personally made $250 million in 2005 and I'm sure he didn't worry about being booed by his fans. Simply amazing. I guess the whole point of this post is that when we put things into perspective, sports memorabilia collecting is little more than a blip on the radar. For me the enjoyment of buying and selling plays a major role in why I surf ebay each night for cards. $50,000.00 could buy you a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 8 or 130 measly shares of Google. I'd rather have the google shares, but I know I would get more enjoyment out of the Mantle. In business, that is really when the numbers get astronomical. I'm off to spend a few measly hundred and/or thousand dollars.

    That's a lotta dough!!!

Our hobby can't compete with the work of the masters.

But, the artist Klimt reminds of a funny line in the movie "Back to School."

    image

Where Thornton Mellon was standing with some of his wife's friends at a party and the guy says:

"your wife was just showing us her Klimpt" and Thornton replies..."I'm not surprised..." [You see he knows she's a slut] - and the guy points to the Klimpt and he says..."oh the painting..."

    Now that's funny!

From time to time someone will bring up an earth sharttering amount paid for a painting.

    And they call us nuts!!!

Well if it makes you feel any better, I could sell all of my cards and bring about five thousand bucks on a good day.

I still wouldn't trade them for a Klimt painting.

Big bank accounts, small bank accounts.........it's not the reason I want more.
