AL Wild Card is UP FOR GRABS

softparadesoftparade Posts: 9,276 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just two weeks ago almost every talking head in the land had either the Tigers or Detroit running away with the AL wildcard. Now that Detroit is running away with the AL Central, the White Sox are in a free fall, the Twins never lose, and the Yankees are holding their own in the division and wildcard, the Jays lurking as always ....... makes for some real interesting baseball image

The Twins are famous for coming out of nowhere, I dont think anybody ever picked them to win a championship during spring training but they won a few. They could make a serious run if they get in....

Perk, nice call on the Twins. My 15 year old son is really getting into baseball this year and we are having fun watching them storm into contention.

I have told Joe Jr. that if they get into the playoffs, with 2 dominant pitchers like Santana and Liriano, and Radke as well, they have as good if not better shot of winning it all as any team in baseball.

  • The Twins scare me with the Santana, Liriano and Radke in their rotation and Nathan in their pen. I think that is the best one-two-three punch out there. As a Jays fan though, I'm relieved that the ChiSox have fallen back to the pack. Now, at least the possibility is out there that two teams from the AL East might make the playoffs. I can't believe the Tigers haven't faltered yet. This team is for real.

The Twins just keep doing more with less, and they should be the sentimental favorite for winning the wildcard, but how much longer can they keep up this torrid pace they're on? Gardenhire is one of the best managers in baseball. And Mauer's been phenomenal too!

The Twins, and as much as it pains this Yankees fan to say, the RedSox are winning with solid, fundamental baseball. The Twins aren't flashy, but if they have a lead, nathan has been shutting it down...and you know that Liriano and Santana are getting and keeping the lead late into the game. The Sox still hit a bunch of homers, but they are winning the way the other Sox did last year...leads and strong pitching. That more than anything scares me about the "idiots".

  • ...with all due respect, the wildcard will come from the tough AL Central.........that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

The Twins are the scariest team that could make the playoffs. Assuming Santana and Liriano wold collectively start 5 games of any 7 game series, odds are extremely good that they will pitch well enough to win at least 4 of them - as long as the Twins hit. That will be the key for them, as the Twins will have the weakest offense of any of the possible wildcard teams.
  • cardfan07cardfan07 Posts: 680 ✭✭
With approximately 62 games left...I think it's a little early to say that the wildcard will be coming from one division or the other. A few weeks back, the tigers and sox were ahead of the twins by a big margin, even though the twins were winning 34 of 42 games... and now, the sox have been caught, and the twins have lots of games left against the central teams. Long answer short, way too early to say that the wildcard is going to be the runner up in the central. The sox have just showed what happens when you hit a 15-20 game skid. The twins, yanks, jays and sox are all bunched up in the wildcard standings. It should be interesting in any event.

The way the talk goes around here, it could have been any number of guys who were the idiot. Ah well, the season still has plenty of time for first place changes and we still have a couple days til the trade deadline.

I'm not convinced the Tigers won't come back to the pack. We saw it last year with the White Sox who very easily could have been beaten out by the Indians. I think the Tigers have a losing streak in them.

it will come down to their starting pitching. the difference between this year and the past, say, two seasons for the tigers has been their pitching. yes, its nice to have a completely healthy ordonez and guillen, but offense has never really been an issue for the tigers the past two seasons. it's been pitching. even when they lost maroth early this year, miner has stepped in quite nicely. if verlander, bonderman, rogers, robertson and miner could pitch as well as they have been (and zumaya and rodney continue to pitch well out of the pen), the tigers will hold their ground. now, im not saying it will happen. lets keep in mind that verlander, zumaya and miner are rookies...rogers is not known as a second half pitcher...and ditto with robertson.

as many have stated above, i wouldnt want to be the team that would face the twins in a 5 game series. IF the series goes 5, you'll have to face liriano and santana twice...not to mention radke sandwiched in between. if the twins can pull off the wild card (or AL central crown), this is likely the best playoff team the twins have sported in the past decade. the mays/milton/radke teams were good pitching wise, but offensively they stunk. although the twins will not have the best offense amongst the AL playoff teams (red sox, white sox, yankees, tigers are better)...they still can pack a punch with mauer, monreau, kubell, stewart, cuddyer, castillo and a healthy hunter. not the most fearsome lineup, but definintely a heckuva lot better than what they've trotted out in past playoff series.

The Tigers may indeed have a losing streak in them, but who honestly thinks that Minnesota can keep up the pace they are on? I think the White Sox collapse of the last couple weeks has to do with Guillen, I think he is on the verge of just losing his team.

I saw last night, the Tigers played a great game, and Liriano was on fire. But it seems, when one pitcher dominates the Tigers, the pitcher the Tigers have in does the same thing. And when the opposing pitcher is taken out of the game, that is when the Tigers seem to take the lead. I saw it last night, saw it against Roger Clemens, and I saw it against Johan Santana earlier this year, not to mention on a few other occasions. A few days ago, I saw the Indians score 7 runs in the first, and the Tigers got right back in the game a few innings later, whereas, Tigers teams of the past would have just quit. Many have been waiting all year for a collapse of the Tigers, but it has yet to happen. Kenny Rogers may have been subpar his last 4 or 5 games, but he has only lost one of them, in fact, the Tigers are 9-1 in his last 10 appearances. Robertson and Miner (although he pitched a great game last night), have cooled off somewhat in the last couple weeks, but Verlander and Bonderman have been lights out. The Tigers can go .500 the rest of the way, and still get 100 wins, division title, wild card, or best record in baseball, fans in Detroit are proud of their Tigers! Win or loss, you do not see Tiger fans booing their players!!!!!!

Yeah, would be just like Chacon, Johnson, Ponson, or Wright starting game one.

And also, it is wonderful to see bri and softparade and their witty responses again. Perhaps you two should go get laid instead of spanking each other, ya think? Perhaps you two should go have your colons cleansed, you two fudge packers seem a little plugged up as of late!

  • Only if the Yankees get the bad calls to their benefit, as I have seen on a few occasions in the last week or so!

But first, the Yankees have to make the playoffs, as do the Tigers, but one team is in better contention! But it will not be, "Yankees lost to the Tigers," it would be, "A-Rod blew it for the Yankees, because he did not homer each at bat!"
