got that coin letter opener

JJMJJM Posts: 8,074 ✭✭✭✭✭
posted this last week and now have it in hand...it IS a 1875 20 ct pc as some of you suggested, and a 1818 lg cent.....I think whomever made this had some metalwork exp.....there are coins in between the ones that you can see used as levelers I guess and some of the larger coins as routed out in cressents to accept the other coins, it appears they are welded and the pc has a very solid and flat handle,.....overall it has a much more silver appearence than the bronze color in the pic,....how the lg cent and the IHP have a silver finish is beyond me,....it does not appear as though the thing was covered with silver or whatever after the fact as the 20 cent pc and other silver coins look pretty original.....I believe the coins are genuine, and cant imagine someone casting these coins for the purpose of making a letter opener. One of the coins has a counterstamp in a foriegn language and the date of 1974, so it must have been made after that, although I gues they could have been added later?...BTW, it works great, had no trouble opening my AMX bill !!!!!

Rather a bizarre item, but I like it. It has character.

They may even not be coins. None of these are.

In fact, they are all just shells of some sort of very thin metal. Reeding and all is just thin foil type stuff. Heavier than foil, but hollow. They poured a glob of lead into the back to make it a paperweight.

    ??????????

  • I like it. Very much. Thank you for posting the images. I am a metalsmith. Perhaps I could make something similar. The only thing I've done with coins was roll out SAE's for using the fine silver. Great for enameling.

    Thanks!
