Lots of people say the same thing about collecting baseball cards. What is so special about a T206 Wagner? It is a card with an image of Wagner. You can get a reprint with the same image, so you get the same enjoyment right? Why spend ~$250,000 for a baseball card that has no real value.
Well some people value that connection to the past. If it is found through a baseball card or an old uniform swatch or a brick from a demolished stadium or Joe DiMaggio's pocket watch, who cares? It works for them.
There are a lot of people around (my girlfriend is one) that couldn't care less about old bats or dirty baseball uniforms. As my friend once said, "who cares, they are just going to dirty some more tomorrow."
Everyone getting this worked up over a bat, a bat which none of us, until now, even knew existed?
Seems like a lot of wasted energy. >>
So no one should care about archeology, right? That is, we never know what is going to be found until it is found, so it's a lot of wasted energy caring about it.
<< <i>And if there truly were such demand for this bat, why didn't a private collector out there buy it? >>

Big difference between human history and a silly bat from a game. There's no comparison for the 2.

You're saying topps was the only one who was given consideration to buy it? Seems to me much ado about nothing.

Sweet! Maybe they will use Ted Williams' frozen carcass as a guinea pig
While they are at it, cut up Mozart's original music sheets, the US Consitution, the Wright Flyer, and the Mona Lisa to create an excellent quad-cut card
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
<< <i>Just wait for the card companies to start cannibalizing old baseball cards into new ones. Watch them buy a bunch of T206 Wagners and hack them up and create inserts, based on a tiered system...
The regular insert could have 1/100th of a Wagner card, cut down to a tiny square, and embedded into the card. (1 of 100) The bronze foil insert could have 1/75th of the Wagner card, cut down to tiny squares... (1 of 75) The Silver foil insert could have 1/50th The Gold foil insert could have 1/25th The Platinum foil insert could have 1/10th And the red chrome platinum edition could have 1/5th of a Wagner.
And if you're really lucky, you could get the special elite black diamond x-fractor chrome platinum atomic nuclear plutonium-glow monolith edition with 1/2 of a Wagner, that stays permanently illuminated for at least 500 years.
And one special fan actually gets a 1/1 full Wagner, but the Wagner will live in the Topps Vault, visible only via webcam 3 hours a day.
Better yet, mulch a hand full of Wagners, mix it with the regular pulp they use to create the cardboard, and produce a special "Wagner's Choice" set, $2500 for a pack of 2, 2 packs per box, 4 boxes per case. Limited to 5000 cases. >>
UD has already cut up a ton of signed Walter Payton and Johnny Unitas cards to be in their SP Legendary cuts sets awhile back....

Even if Josh Gibson stated that he used the bat, how the heck does he really know? It's not like sports stars are pillars of truth. Many sports stars are prone to exaggeration and if they happen to need some money, an easy way to do so would be to produce a "game used" bat and sign it. Vintage memorabilia for the most part is a scam and a pathetic joke, with cutting the stuff up in my opinion even a bigger scam still.

When GERONIMO was in 'captivity' people use to come and see him and marvel at him. They all wanted to see the most famous Indian. Many wanted more than just a look. In fact, Geronimo would sign some autographs(and sell them), or sell some of his 'game worn' souvenirs. For instance, just before some people were about to come into his room, one of Geronimo's pals quickly handed him some simple feathers(that weren't Geronimo's) to quickly put into his head band. When the spectators came in to see him, they saw Geronimo with the feathers sticking in his headband. What more than a feather souvenir worn by the famous Geronimo! Being the entreprenuer he was, he would sell the people those feathers for a few dollars apiece. People walked away with 'game worn' feathers from Geronimo!
Geronimo may very well have been a pioneer in the field of selling autographs and game used memorabilia.
Ax, With all due respect, neither you or I collect game used bats or Negro League memorabilia. To a lot of people, carving up this bat would have the same meaning to them that cutting up a T206 Wagner or mint 52 Topps Mantle would mean to us. Just because this bat doesn't mean a lot to you, doesn't mean it doesn't have historic and sentimental value to a lot of other people.
I agree with Lee, though I'm not personally very upset about it, it's just the general nature of what is occuring......a piece of history that survived the test of time is being destroyed to put on baseball cards. To certain collectors of this type of memorabilia, I'm sure it means much more....
