Home U.S. Coin Forum

An observation...

I'm actually trying to figure it out. Has the forum sunk to the depths of the many stock forums I follow? There are so many here that strive so hard to make this enjoyable and a few who seem to have their own agenda.
I honestly don't know the answer to my question.
I remain steadfast in my opinion that most who post here would be welcome in my foxhole.
Everytime I start to doubt it; reading the negative threads, I always find a jewel. Someone giving from their heart or sharing their expertise.
Bottom line; this is a forum I'm proud to be a member of. jws

There are people with their personal agendas; however, there are many good people. I can honestly say my closest friends came from these boards.

Edited to add: yes, I'm that much of a dork.

No matter what the forum, church, office, card club, ball club, platoon, family, etc. you are going to have disagreements. The internet provides a certain annonymity where people can speak candidly w/o fear of reprisal [well, almost none]. Where else do you really have that freedom?

No one forces anyone to read all posts. I find many to be repetitive and silly, usually the same perpetrators. You learn to avoid those. Then there are those people who always have something interesting to say and that makes this place worthwhile.

At the same time I feel it's important to have a wide mix of people and perspectives but you never know who you can learn from. Compared to the crap on 99% of boards/forums this place is a paradise.

I like the threads that share REAL numismatic knowledge, or a new coin that someone is proud of. I'm getting a little tired of the threads that say "Hey some d00d on eBay is gonna rip people off OMG!!11!"

This is the only forum I've ever joined where there was no negative harrassing remarks stated meant to turn newbies away. I had lurked here for several months prior and always have observed this, for the greater part, as a board for ladies and gentlemen. It's very refreshing to share knowledge instead of seeing who can cut up the other the best.

I think there are enough good folks here giving great information and really making concerted efforts to promote the hobby that it offsets the trolls. Leo

  • Many good folks here and a lot of great information. I usually search for "Lincoln" or "wheat" to get to my specialty and I tend to avoid the "political/whiny" threads. I also avoid most ebay-related threads unless the title subject is something that I have experienced or worry about, e.g. fraud, phishing, etc.

    So Julio:

Would you say you are more of a conservative, or more of a Liberal? If you're not sure, what is your position on Gay Mariage?

Just kidding. I agree that for the most part, this place is a fun and friendly place to learn - however, I think part of the reason this Coin Forum is so successful, is because the Open Forum functions as a sort of pressure valve for everything that is not coin related.

This forum is pretty good actually, self-moderating as long as someone doesn't bring up IGWT, politics, (Gold Buffalos...LOL), things like that. If you ever think it has soured go look at the RCC newsgroup.

Wow Artist you have me thinking.

You are right this thread would probably belong in the open forum. Didn't know there was such a thing.

Now to the tough questions posed in jest.

    Conservative/liberal?

Depends on the issue. Studied Rousseau and Hobbes. I believe in the social contract.

Liberal/conservative are words with little meaning but usefull in a broad context. In that respect I'm a bleeding heart liberal.

When it comes to the defense of America, I support the big stick theory.

Human choice. Most would consider me aristocentric. Something I'm not proud of.

I live to learn, only problem, I'm mortal. jws

When I first joined the forum this really bothered me. I've learned to not get caught up in others drama/agenda's. I'm here to learn about coins and try to share some coin knowledge. Oh yeah, and post pic's too:image

    Julio -

I wasn't trying to bust your chops - a thread in the coin forum that appreciates the coin forum is fine by me. image All I was really trying to point out, is how in the Coin Forum people really do come together on the subject of coins, yet in the Open Forum, some of those same people can really get mean towards one another when discussin issues of Politics - in recent months, Gay Marriage has been a paticularly volatile issue. Still, as contentious as the OF can be, I think that without it people's aggression may funnel into this place to a greater degree.

Of course the battle between Laura Legend & the entire Modern World still rages...

In the interest of clarity, as this is a very broad statement, give an example of a negative, in your opinion, thread.
