Why do people sell coins to stamp auction houses?

I work at one of the larger stamp auction houses in the US. These people know nothing about coins! Today they showed me a box of Silver proofs from Great Britain, up to 5 Pound pieces, all thrown loose in a box because they will get silver value for them. It kills me when collections come in and are sold by widows who know nothing about what their spouse collected.

People tell your loved ones what you have or leave information as to the disposal.

I tried to buy the coins they get, but I'm not trusted to give the true value as I'm the only one there who knows coins.

I told ladymarcovan to call Aethelred and dispose of my numismatic holding through him, should I croak. (He's several years younger than me, and he's quit smoking and started eating better, so chances are, he won't croak before I do.) image

Damn, I think I need to do that. I'm old, I smoke (quitting soon) and my wife would have no clue about my coins.

My Mrs knows that the Gold coins are expensive, she knows not to touch raw coins or at least to hold them by their sides and not to get them scratches or cleaned.

Not sure she knows how to sell them though.........hmmmm.

The good news is that no matter how late you quit, at least half of that dark stuff in the lungs goes away within less than a month, or so I read. 75%-80% of the damage is vanished within your first smoke free year. I keep that in mind for whenever I too decide to quit, for now, it makes me feel better and less guilty. image

An inventory of the most valuable coins and their current market value should be quite helpful too, along with selling directions and suitable venues for it.

I told Mrs. ajaan to send the coins to Aethelred upon my demise. I figured he'll give her 40c on the dollar compared to the 25c she will get around here.
