Okay, they've both been cracked. The '84s were brutal centering. I pulled a Green rookie but the centering is bad t/b and l/r. I don't even think I pulled a common that would have a shot at a 9.
The '82 box was decent for card selection. I pretty much got one each of the major cards and the centering left a little to be desired on those. The Montana MAY have a shot at a 9, we'll see. The box was actually fownright fantastic when it comes to centering, no real issues at all and the cards came out really nice ... with the exception of the Taylor, Lott and Munoz.
There was one issue, however. The cards were all warped, almost like minor water damage. So I have a few questions that I hope some of you guys might be able to answer:
1.) Is there any way I can determine for sure if the cards have water damage?
2.) If they do have water damage, how does this typically affect the grading? Numbers or do they have a qualifier for that?
3.) Is this [warped cards] just one of those things you have to take while purchasing 25 year-old wax? Is it rare of indicative of older wax?
If you are looking to move it, I'd like that "In Action" LT. The Dorsett looks to me to be a solid 9, a stretch 10 do to the edges on the R and the bottom.

I know it isn't water damage, as nearly all of the older wax I've opened has had atleast some warpage.

I work in the printing industry and it depends on how and where the cards are stored. Humidity and temperature of area they are kept in makes a big difference. Paper stored in high humidity or in an above-room temperature setting over an extended period of time will warp or curl. If it was water damage I think you would see wrinkles in the card stock.
First, if there was any water damage, you should be able to see discoloration in many of the cards.
Second, I opened a 1985 wax box, all the cards were warped to some degree, I put them in a storage box and they pretty much flettened out after several months.
Third, did you get an Art Shell worthy of a 9 and willing to part with it? It's the last 9 I need in an Art Shell and mine is not even close.
Good luck if you plan to submit some of those cards. I agree, the Dorsett looks pretty awesome.
I've seen this too, with a box of 1985 Topps football I busted last year. I noticed that the "warping" was even with the placement of the gum in the pack. Given the ammount of gum damage (and bleeding), I suspect that the cards were stored in a humid enviornment for a while, enough to cause the gum to crystalize and get nasty looking. As the cards remained stacked in the box in their packs, the middle parts (where the gum usually was) were nice and secure, but the edges around it sagged just a bit, enough to give cards a general "warped" look. If you take a look at some of the wax-stained cards, you might even detect the impression of the gum from the pack under it.
I got the warping out by putting the cards in Card Saver 1's, stacking them up, and putting some heavy books and boxes on the cards for a few weeks. For the most part, this flattened them out really good. As to how they grade, don't know yet. We'll see when my June special grades pop.
Ok 1982 Topps Football experts, for figuring out centering, what counts as the "top" of the graphics on the card? Would it be the very tip top of the "t" in Topps, or from the line that goes through the "t" in Topps (and forms the upper border line for the picture)?

I'm not a professional grader (you'll have to consult 52mantlebuyer on that) but this may have a shot. If you want it, PM me your address and I'll send it out to you.
Does anybody remember who was looking for Dan Ross cards? I pulled one and would be happy to send it to the person.

That Shell is sweeeeeet.
As for the centering, I think its from the top border and not from the tip of the "t."
