Help with a defect found in vintage cards.........

Have any of y'all run across a defect I've started to notice on many vintage cards, and that is an indented wrinkle or line - not a surface wrinkle - running across the bottom lower edge of a card, on the back. I rarely see it on the top upper edge, it is almost always on the bottom lower edge. And, it is an indented wrinkle, not on the surface. It looks like a factory defect, or something that was caused during printing.

Curious as to feedback about this.......I have a couple of cards like this and am not going to get them graded due to this, but I would love to know if others have seen this and know what it is and what causes it.

Thanks.

I think it's caused by the cutting process. I've got a 1971 Topps baseball card with those "wrinlkes" along the back left and right edges. For perspective, I have a 1992 Bowman card with that same problem, and it's sitting in a PSA 9 holder (314x cert). Other than the edge "wrinkles", the card seems perfect under 10x magnification, so maybe the grader only down-graded it 1 grade for that problem.

    Hi Ron

I have a 66 Mantle with the same thing - on the back lower margin.

Also, I have some 1996 Bowmans with the same thing - since it's an entirely different kind of cardboard, I'm inclined to agree with Digi that it occurred during the process of cutting. I've never seen that kind of wrinkling anywhere else but near the edge myself.

So, because of that wrinkle - I figure if the card was a 7 - it would probably get a 6 or 5?

Mike - I think that makes sense that it occurred during the cutting process. I have a '69 Clemente that is an absolute blazer - 50/50 centered with 8 corners, perhaps 9. I am afraid to submit it though, because it has this defect.

Especially if you want to sell the card Ron

If a person is buying raw and not grading - they may overlook that type of "production crease" as part of the charm of the card - but once it goes to PSA, it's most likely gonna take a big hit.

  • I have seen that on many cards. I have submitted 2 or 3 with that phenomenom and they have all come back 8s.
