Sometimes, Heritage blows.

So, I ride an auction to the end last night to see if I'd get outbid. At the end, I'm the winner!

So, I come in this morning all excited and ready to pay for my coin only to find this:

They extended the auction 24 hours due to "technical problems". That's funny. I didn't see any technical problems as I was refreshing it every couple minutes last night.

GRRRRRRRR.

    Sometimes?
  • send a nasty letter to them.
kind of sux when you look at it.

  • was 65.00 the maximum you were willing to pay? seems if it is going to be a 24 hour extension you may still win the auction (if you are willing to go higher). I agree it does stink when you have something pulled out from under you like that, I had a coin do the same thing and I didn't check the next day because I was out of town and I lost the item when I fully expected to have the invoice in the email the coming up Monday but instead I got nothing

problem is with buys premium and then heritages shipping, Russ would be looking at 90-05+ to try and win it now... Not worth it anymore..

Yep. I always place only one bid at the max I'm willing to go, whether it's Teletrade, Heritage or sniping on eBay. Calculating in the juice and shipping that puts it at what I'm willing to risk buying based on an image. Normally, this wouldn't even be a coin I'd buy, but I caught a bad case of "I'd REALLY like to see what this one looks like in hand. " image

Yeah, I got burned bigtime on that Jules Reiver online session. I cherried a 1900 VAM-24 and made the mistake of posting on this forum that I got it after I confirmed I was the winner. Then the next day they reran the auction and got in a bidding war over it. Heritage cost me significant money on that one. Generally, though, I have been pleased with the many years of bidding with them.

Well.....maybe "technically" it wasn't going for enough money!

I really hate it when this crap happens!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Total bummer. They should notify all winning bidders that the auction has been extended 24 hours.

Doesn't Heritage having a later auction close for their "preferred" customers?

Floor auctions, not internet auction. For signature sales, most bidders get cutoff in their online bidding at midnght before the session. Legacy customers, people who have reliably spent a lot of money regularly and always pay on time, get to go until a few hours before the auction hits the floor. Some people think that is unfair. I assure you, you would be a Legacy customer if you were bidding on the lots where this probably is an advantage and Legacy folks would simply hang on the phone or use a representative (even if they did personally view the lots themselves) on the floor anyway.

I'd contact Greg or Jim Halperin and tell them exactly what happened. I would bet they make good one way or another.

I have found Heritage to be outstanding these days with customer service and satisfaction. Suffice it to say, I have done a LOT of business with them.

The only "make good" I'd want is the coin, and that wouldn't be fair to the new bidder. Sooner or later, another will come along.

Yeah...I know that...but it's noce to have them owe you one. It would pay out in spades.

Phone bidding is the way to go on the high ticket items. Sometimes being a Legacy member dosn't help, since you can still get outbid from the floor. I enjoy watching the live auctions over the internet and waiting for my lots to come up to bid on.

I'd guess the consignor is pretty happy with the 24 hour extension. The coin ended up selling for $110 plus juice. A nice little 69% increase over my "winning" bid.

  • What a great racket! Set a deadline to expose all the snipers, then extend it by a day. Nothing like changing the rules on the fly.

It's like those nightmares I used to have where the university would call to tell me due to an error I hadn't really graduated and would have to take more hours.
  • It stinks and it rots and it smells to me, quite honestly.
