If Forman patted himself on the back any harder he might have broken some bones.

Could Joh of MOSH have been the buyer? I thought he was strictly PSA?
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

I think MOSH is based in Chicago - the article said the seller was on the East coast. BTW, the centering is weak - even for a PSA 9.

Wasn't that on display in SGC's booth at the national last year? I remember seeing it, it's so nice I thought it was a reprint they were showing off. I do agree with Greg though, the centering is VERY weak for a 9, or at least very unappealing which has always been my knock on SGC. That said though, that card is absolutely stunning to look at in person and the SGC holder does make it look very nice.
  • The card looks to be 60/40 or slightly better which is totally acceptable for a Mint 9.
    I love candy cards
  • Do you guys know if PSA does the breakdown thing like the Beckett fellas? I mean, if a cards corners, edges and surface are all exceptional will this help PSA to slide a little on the centering? Sorry if this hijacks the thread.

If I had an extra $240K to blow, I would go marry the new Miss Universe. Hot beauty queen who is 18 years old.............much better than a 70 year old piece of cardboard.

Ron, we all know that if you had an extra 240K laying around you'd buy your way onto the Network Nightly News.

That's a shocking price. Wentz had that card for $250k, then lowered it to $125k, and it still didn't sell. He had to have been dissapointed with getting less than 1/3 his original asking price, but I'm sure this makes up for it a little. I'm still trying to remember who bought it on eBay... Don Louchios was the underbidder I think....

Joe - who are you kidding, it's not like he paid $80k for the card when he bought it. Wentz still made out handsomely on the sale. I think, as a general rule, that a number of the items in their inventory is priced well above market, which might indicate more of a 'museum' than someone who pays their monthly bills with sportscard dealings. That said - they do move some items [albeit slowly], and they often have some absolutely stunning pieces.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I reread my post, and it does sound like Wentz-bashing, which it was not intended to be. That card was impossible to price, so in that case why not start out high and work your way down. And I'm sure he made money at the $80k price tag, and made money by "facilitating" its resale. I don't know if he owned it outright at the time or was selling on consignment, but having to knock $170k off the price of a card to find a buyer has to be dissapointing to a dealer.

At any rate, it's shocking that it sat on his website and at his table at shows for a long time at $125k, and couldn't find a buyer. Now one is willing to pay twice that, and thrice what it actually sold for. I did think the $80k was low at the time; I thought it would go for 6 figures.

I won't be adding that to my 1935 national chicle set, especially since my rating is a like 1.5 overall or something.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

    Wow, that's a great price!

The guys who guy cards like this don't post in forums like this I guess.

But, even if I won the lottery for a skabillion bucks - I would still post here!

The card was a PSA 9 about 5 years ago, so the centering falls within the PSA and SGC standard for a 9, which are the same. I think the black insert makes centering pop out much more significantly.

LOL....I just typed in Nagurski and found this old thread. Seems Jon was wanting to get an opinion on the card he just bought.
