Mays cards - what do you think?

Hi all,

My first post - been reading the board for a couple months, and I'm very impressed with the knowledge here.

I collected as a kid in the 60's....then started again in the late 80's. Bought raw stuff from shows before the graders came along. And, of course I have a ton of worthless 88-90 cards....

I bought several Willie Mays cards then, couldn't afford Mantle, so I went for Mays.

I haven't submitted any for grading yet, and I'm curious what you think they will grade at.

Here's the first (let's see if I can post this scan right). It's funny - the corners are beautiful but seem a little soft in the scan -

Thanks!

Mark

Hello and welcome ! I am sure anyone here would be glad to help if you could make the pic a little bigger, Thanks !

  • Looks like the minimum grade would be 7 and a big maybe on an 8!
  • Hi Banker - what size do you see it as? I'm seeing it as a normal size...

Really ? It looks like it is Thumbnail size to me .

  • I'd second the 7 possibly an 8 (depending on that top right corner)
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

    Hi Mark

    First, Welcome!!!

You're spanning some good decades of collecting!

The Mays is very nice - I really can't tell for sure from the scan - but it looks like a 7 to me - good day? 8?
Would like to see the corners a bit clearer. The centering is nice.

Good luck if you submit the card. Hope you enjoy your stay here.

So, don't be a stranger; shoes optional.

Looks like a for sure 7, with a good shot at an 8. Definitely worth sending in. What else do you have along that line?

    Welcome.

It looks a lot like my ungraded '60 Clemente. I would echo everyone else. At least a 7 and maybe an 8.
  • Here's a few more - 7s or 8s also? (Does the real card always look better than the scan?)

  • My philosophy is if you can see wear on the corners on a scan, then it will NOT get an 8. Possible seven. The rest would probably get 6's. That's just my two cents worth.....

  • It's hard to tell without looking at the backs, but:
'62- no higher than a 7, likely 6- a lot of chipping along the sides
'59- no higher than a 7, also likely a 6- looks like too much white missing on all four corners and bottom left center edge a little suspect.
'67- maybe 7, bottom two corners look somewhat soft and can't really see the top left. Centering is not great.
'60 looks like the best of the 4.

No matter what they come back as, I don't think you can go wrong submitting them. Do you belong to Collector's Universe? You can always submit these as part of your 6 free submissions for joining with a one-year subscription. They don't look too bad at all.

That depends on how you are viewing them live. Do you own a loupe? If not, get one ASAP or you will be missing a lot of flaws that PSA is going to nail you on.

What is a loupe and where can I buy one? Grassy ass.

A fancy name for a magnifier. Like the one that jewelers use.

You can go on-line or go to any hobby store like hobby lobby and pick on up for around 5-10 bucks.

There are more expensive ones also.

Perhaps my younger eyes are just more potent, but I can see very very well without a loupe. I can clearly see the edges and corners with it right up to my nose... $10 I can spend on cards instead of a loupe! tee hee hee!

PSA is brutal on grading, that is one reason why they are the best. You will absolutely get a fair grade but be very and I stress very conservative on what you think you'll get back. Cards I have sent in thinking that will get a 7 come back a 6 or even a 5. I look at the card again and see where I messed up thinking I was going to get a better grade. chaz

I'd also recommend getting a lighted one- it's a couple bucks more, but well worth it IMO.
  • So you guys are saying that if a seller states the carde is in "wicked awesome condition" I shouldn't take his word for it and assume PSA will return a wicked awesome grade? I'm pretty sure "wicked awesome" can be upheld in court.
  • Now I'm afraid to look closer.....

I do miss the days of raw cards though, just being a collector and not really looking to sell anything. Nothing like a sweet card, just by itself, no grade, looking like mint to me.

Well it can still be that way if you want it to be. There are many "old timers" who don't believe in the whole concept of grading. If you plan on selling these you will increase your bottom line if you get them graded. If you plan to keep them I would save your money and leave them just like they are. Grading is a choice made by the collector so you can do whatever you want with them.
