Never heard of that TPG, but I don't get around much. I have no clue as to the trustworthiness of the seller; hopefully others do have some insight or experience with him.

Beware of "NNC" and other such "grading services".

But of course I am sure you know that.

The seller looks decent enough. And the coin does look UNC, though I would wanna see bigger pictures.

No real red flags to my eyesight, aside from the crap plastic.

    Beware of NNC "certified" pieces!

I just received coins today from my experiment just to see how close or far off NNC grades are, from Ebay seller 'centsles'.

Of the 7 coins, I am returning 5 of them:

Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia) 2.5 cents, 1920, NNC MS63 BR. My grade: AU53

    French Indo-China 1/2 cent, 1935, NNC MS63 BR. My grade: AU50

    Macau 20 Patacas 1974, NNC MS64. My grade: AU58

    Brazil 40 Reis, 1873, NNC AU58. My grade: XF45

    Egypt 40 Para, 1869, NNC VF30. My grade: F15

    Two that I am keeping:

    French Indo-China 5 Cents, 1935, NNC MS66. My grade: MS65

    Comoros 1 Franc 1964, NNC MS66. My grade: MS64-65

    Thank goodness for return privileges...

Centles used to be the #1 seller of Accugrade (ACG) material, until the stench of that particular rotten herring became commonplace and they lost their bottom-rung market reputation. That should tell you something.

I wonder if NNC is ACG's successor? Hm.

Back in my liteside days, I bought a US Indian Head cent in an NNC holder in EF-40, cracked it, and ANACS graded it AU-58. The funny part was that I was only trying to get it in an ANACS holder for consistency for the rest of the set - I wasn't concerned about the grade.

These negs don't really bother me. I haven't seen too many of the castings and electrotypes that are so widely available from Mainland China being listed from Singapore, and I've had some good experiences with sellers in Singapore in the past.

Now that's funny. It's true that sometimes one can actually score some good bargains on coins in Third World holders. The real danger with them lies with hidden or unstated problems, though, rather than simple overgrading which is apparent to the eye. I once decided to take a gamble on a high-grade US Seated Liberty half in an ACG XF45 holder. I could see the coin had at least AU53, if not AU55, details.

I was right- when I cracked the coin and sent it to ANACS, it did receive an "AU details" grade, but they net-graded it down to EF40 for cleaning and some tooling. I lost a little bit in the gamble, but learned a lesson and was just glad it wasn't a very expensive lesson.

Those who are really confident of their eyesight and have good pictures to work from can occasionally reap some good cherrypicks out of poor plastic, though.

Let's look at the facts and start with 10 points:

    * Very poor pictures - subtract 2 points.
    * TPG of unknown reliability - subtract 2 points. Can this TPG adequately detect counterfeits? Who knows?
    * 7 day return policy: is that "7 days from when he sends it" or "7 days from when you get it?" Maybe add back 1 point, but check with the seller about the details - does he refund for TPG pieces? Many don't.
    * No prior experience with the seller is mentioned in the thread - no points added.
    * The feedback is reasonable and the negs the seller received are generally silly ones - no points added or subtracted. OK, this is my opinion, but I will assume most who read the negs and neutrals will come to a similar conclusion.
    * Amount of money involved is under $100 - no points added or deducted.

Final score tally is 7 points. It's a gamble, but does not quite rate my "stay away" recommendation. Since there is a nebulous return policy (again, confirm this with seller first) and if you are good at detecting whether a coin is counterfeit or not, it could be worth a try, depending on your willingness to take a chance.

  • I,ve been waiting nearly 6 weeks for a coin from this seller although it may not be his fault. Shipping seemed very cheap, perhaps he has sent it by land.
  • Thanks everyone......I've decided to pass. image
