Ebay buyer dispute

mrearlygoldmrearlygold Posts: 17,858 ✭✭✭
This XXXX bid on my Wifes brand new ebay auction, then called us and asked if we were a scam, then said he's not paying.

We are new to ebay and this really pisses me off. If we alert ebay about this guy, can he give my wife a negative feedback???

What would you do?

Tom, please provide ALL of the details. His limited feedback is fine - what was the reason for his concern and how polite (or not) were you when he expressed it?image

Checking his bid history for the last 30 days I don't find where he won anything from a new eBay seller.

He called and asked if we were "legit". Asked if we are US Rare Coin Investments and when I replied affirmatively, he chuckled and said he doesn't send money to just anyone and to cancel the order. It was not just what he was saying but the way he was saying it that lit my fuse. I advised him to google me, how long I've been in the business and that I would give him negative feedback if he renegs. He said he didn't want to hear from us and hung up the phone.

Russ, my Wife just set that up and she's only got 4 sales in the last week. I think though she has the listing reflect that she's a part of USRCI ( for obvious reasons)

If no transaction was completed then, no, he cannot leave negative feedback.

I'm not clear - did he place a bid through Ebay and win the item? If so, the transaction wouldn't be complete, but he could still leave negative feedback - I've done it with/to scammers beforeimage

    Mark,

The bidder has only won three auctions in the past 30 says and all the sellers have thousands of feedback.

Tom, don't let that guy push your buttons. Some people are just here on this Earth to use up oxygen and other natural resources, and nothing more.

How did he get your number?

Post a link to the auction.
  • BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,556 ✭✭✭✭✭
Good job with that info Russ....
Looking at it, I would agree that it appears THAT ebayID (hively1989) has NOT bid on anything by a new ebayer.

Either there is a case of mistaken identity and it appears Tom needs to edit his post or there is some other mistake going on.

We are missing the auction# in question though......

I just called the guy to apologize. I asked my Wife "where" was the address on the auction to mail us payment, and she told me "we're taking paypal so I didn't put the address on the auction". image OKIE DOKIE, so..........I decided to call the guy, apologize for barking at him and let that go wherever it goes.

He sounded like an ok guy and apparently is more nervous about this ebay thing than most people are. When he saw no address he called here and while he did sound confrontational , paranoid and accusatory, I probably didn't need to snap his head off.

I'm a firm believer in taking personal responsibility and while I disagree with how Steve acted, I can't take responsibility for his actions, but I MUST take it for how I acted and therefore I apologized.

He told me that ebay told him that no addresses and post office boxes are a sure sign of a fraudulent dealer. ( why did he bid at all then? ) I take a real issue with that. I've been in this business for a long long time and few people have my physical address for obvious safety reasons. So if ebay in fact is saying that then ebay needs a swift kick in the rear end. This guy took it to an extreme but nevertheless it is what it is.

Sorry if I jumped the gun. I still have reservations about all this so I'll be quiet for a moment and try and think if there's anything else I need to say or do about it.

You still didn't post a link to the auction. Is it a secret?
  • GoldenEyeNumismaticsGoldenEyeNumismatics Posts: 13,187 ✭✭✭
You are able to give him negatiove feedback, but he will probably do the same for you. It would really hurt your ebay positive feedback percentage to get a negative when you are so new to ebay.
  • mrearlygoldmrearlygold Posts: 17,858 ✭✭✭
GoldenEyeNumismatics, thanks, she cancelled the auction and we are just writing this one off. ( she was only going to make 15 bucks on that coin anyway,)

Barry, not a secret but Hanh's making lunch and I've been trying to do this and ten other things. Let me ask her where it is....

I don't get it. He said he wasn't paying even before he actually won anything?

Okay, this explains why the auction doesn't show up on a bidder search.

<< <i>Winning bidder: User ID kept private >>

    Why the private auction?

    Russ, NCNE

  • mrearlygoldmrearlygold Posts: 17,858 ✭✭✭
I don't know why. I just asked her and she says it might not be a good idea either.

  • BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
Thanks Tom. I like the the listing. Nicely designed and good pics. There aren't too many sellers that put their address in the listing, so I don't know why this guy was so concerned, other than your low feedback rating, being an Ebay newbie.

The only thing I would change is the private auction. As a rule, when I see that, it makes me think twice about the auction.

The main images for both her Isle of Man coins are not showing. Might be something that could be fixed?

Thanks guys, maybe there's a directnic issue which is where she is hosting the images.

Other than creating a make believe page on one of our websites which we were told could damage our search engine rankings, can someone please suggest where to host pictures for use on ebay listings????????

They are there now. I had to go directly to the image link and load it, then reload the auction page. Anyone else having trouble with them loading?

Tom, there's a plethora of free image hosting sites around. I'll suggest www.photobucket.com. Try a google search for "image hosting" and I'm sure you'll be surprised at the choices.image

If you're using a Windows program, why not just create photo files in the My Pictures folder of My Documents?

    Private auction
Only paypal listed and no paypal address (that could be the address mentioned) in the listing
    Florida
New seller (low ratings) somewhat recently created (Dec '05 and still only 4 in ratings)
High value item (to me, that means over $300 or more with such a low rating in a private auction)

All joking aside, the things above would keep me from bidding as I would be suspect of the listing.

It's definitely a learing experience. So you wouldn't bid. I can understand that. But would you bid, then reneg on what you win ?

    Methinks not

  • What he did is kind of strange. As mentioned by another forum member, you might want to do away with the private bidder. When you put this along with the low feedback it would keep me from bidding on such an expensive item. Dont get frustrated by one moron, it's not worth it image

Just let it go. It is just one bidder. It's no use getting your knickers in a twist. There are millions of other bidders out there. The bidder seems odd and don't waste your energy on him.

Forget about time periods like the past 30 days. Concern yourself with getting positive feedback.

I doubt eBay said such things about P.O. Boxes, etc., when they obviously support counterfeiters doing business out of China.

Lively1989 has only been on eBay since this April.

It seems logical to list an auction as Private to protect the bidders identities. I didn't know it was met with such a negative attitude toward the seller.

    Good points !

It's pretty cool. I sold a number of coins from the ebay account ( mine ) and it's neat as heck. I feel like a dinosaur though....image

The Wife is really getting into it and I find myself shifting gears a bit to try and find supplies for her new ebay biz which is so much different from what I buy and sell.....but a lot of similar type of stuff that I handled sooooo many years ago when I had a coin shop in NJ. Almost a return to that era with a futuristic twist.

Looks like it's gonna be time to finally start cleaning out the toy box!

    Really neat.image

You are correct, I would not bid and reneg. Unless I was certain it was a scam.....raw trade dollar from china, etc.

As you said, learning experience. For a start, she is doing a good presentation and that is better than a lot with experience can do.
