What paper or storage device will NT a coin?

Lets say im storing my coins away for several years. What is the best was to achieve NT on those silver coins? I have had several Dansco albums for about a year now and have noticed very little toning, although there are a few that have begun. What if the coins are placed in paper/mylar coins flip? What about manila evalopes?

I did start a Washington/Statehood quarter set a few years ago in a Whitman album and all the coins have taken a golden tone to them.

What other factors play a role in NT?

Or is it all by chance?

Any experiences out there?

It is all about the temperature, humidity, atmospheric gasses as well as what level of sulphides and/or acidic chemicals are present in the holder or album. Just remember that there is just as great of a probability that the coins will end up unattractive (corroded looking with black spots or areas and/or splotchiness) as opposed to attractive. Especially if the humidity is too high, the coins might develop unnatractive spots. If the humidity is too low the toning will be minimized and take really long to develop, but it will be less likely to be really nasty looking (and you will have time to notice that the coins are being damaged and you can remove the coins before the damage is as severe).

In a past thread on this subject, someone said he got good results with Taco Bell napkins. I don't remember if they were used or not.

The more effort/trouble you go to and the faster you try to achieve so-called "natural" toning, the closer you are getting to "artificial" toning, instead.image
  • It would seem that when you go about attempting to Tone a coin by whatever means, by definition, it will be AT ? ? ! ! It is merely achieving the color desired in days, weeks or months rather than a minute or two !

my opinion is that any effort made to achieve toning is an artificial means, the main factor being intent. since the chemical reaction taking place to achieve the tone is technically damaging the surface of the coin it should behoove each of us from intentionally helping that transpire. buying old Wayte Raymond albums, sulfer laden envelopes, setting a coin exposed on a window-sill, all of these achieve artificial tone. you can rationalize things however you want and quite possibly come away with a clear concsience, everything turns on what you intended to do. shouldn't the intent be to preserve the surface integrity of a coin and not hasten change no matter how much we like the way it looks or can possibly enhance our pocketbook??

    JMHO, of course.

thanks, Mark. i actually think some of this type of stuff can be good if done in the manner that Truthteller did it, sort of like an experiment to help identify what the truth about some of the coins we see might be. when it's done to attain some goal, such as the dearth of members who want to find the old Wayte Raymond folders to achieve a toned set, then i get a sour belly. i actually go the other route; i have two sets where i'm trying to find the nicest toned coins possible and i stick them in an Intercept Shield folder to stabalize them.

i'm confused by the fact that more don't speak out about such things. when the work of NCS is mentioned, there's generally a voice which says "If you want a brilliant coin just keep looking till you find one, don't mess with a toned coin" or something of that nature. this is the other side of that arguement. certainly there are enough toned coins to meet the demands of collectors so that we don't need to manufacture any additional ones on a hit-miss basis. i wonder, what will be the affect of these "experiments" in 5-10 years??

I dont think that is a real picture. The label says 1974-D.. and appears to be an OGH. A 2003 ASE could never have gotten into a holder like that. I call "PS" (Photoshop image)
