Dansco 7070 Commemorative Question

lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 8,312 ✭✭✭✭✭
OK...So I've decided to take the plunge and do a 7070 type set. What commemorative halves do you typically put into your set? It there a general theme here or is it purely happenstance?

Thanks

Leo

  • That beautiful choice can only be dicided by you. I went with two classics and two moderns.

    Edited to add:

The subtle choices involved in building a 7070 are the real joys of type collecting and, IMHO, why that particular album is so popular.

I put 4 lightly circulated early commems in my 7070. Oregon, Grant, Pilgrim, Stone Mtn. I think modern commems look silly in those spots. Just my opinion.

I'm also into boating, so I'm doing Commems which have ships on the reverse. I currently have the Pilgrim, Columbian, Long Island and the Rhode Island (well....it has an anchor). I eventually plan to replace the Rhode Island with either a Hudson or a Huguenot.

I left those holes empty. IMO, the type set represents coins that were used in circulation.

(In case you looked at my set and you're wondering why I have a Buff Dollar and SAE in my set, it's because I already owned them.)

Like JCarney, I did ships. I have the Columbian, Huguenot and Pilgrim. The last one is a toss-up. More than likely, it will be a Norfolk. Also, I plan to do the Leif Ericson commem for the dollar. The fun of the whole thing was examining each commem, some of which I had never even seen. I also considered an animal/bird theme, but ships seemed more fitting. You could really find any interesting theme that appeals to you. I am not sure there are four with Microbiologists, but something will hit you. Let us know when you decide.

If price was no object I would have the Gettysburg Half and the Antietam half and the Stone Mountain half and the Grant Half. Or maybe the Illinois Lincoln Half. Or the modern Civil War Battlefields coins.

image Too bad they are darn expensive. Someday, though.

    Mine are:

    1893 Columbian, 1946-S Booker T. Washington, 1953-S Washington-Carver
(plus empty hole - still trying to find a raw, uncleaned AU-58 or MS-60 Iowa)

and I've got a 1991-D USO Silver Dollar in the modern hole.

My choices were mostly made for financial reasons...

Barry, many of the early commemoratives were placed into circulation for one reason or another. The Columbian, for example, didn't sell out and the vast leftovers dumped into circulation. Other types also come to mind.

Following your logic it would make much less sense to have an American Silver Eagle featured in your Dansco than, say a Pilgrim half.

In my set I have the Connecticut in VF; the California (both types) in AU and the Pan Pac in VF.

This is an excellent point - all of my commems (except the USO in the modern slot) are circulated, too.
It is really becoming a bear for me to try and fine a nice raw Iowa (uncleaned) for that last hole...
Getting a slabbed MS-63 to 66 would be no problem at all, but that is not what I am after.

Collectors can choose 4 commemorative halves among classics or moderns

I went with 4 of my favorite commem designs in a theme to represent America:
Discovery, Settlement, Expansion West, and our Finest City, and my hometown, San Diego

  • Baley, can we see the rest of your type set? That page has me transfixed.
  • I also have two older and two modern commemoratives in those holes. Stone Mountain, Gettysburg, Geo. Washington, and Congress. And while the pictured page above me is very nice, I have no proofs anywhere. I very much dislike the look of proofs in a type set.
What do you think, Mr. Bigglesworth?

Your commemorative slots are a personal decision and really not one you should take lightly.

One is dedicated to a modern and that only leaves you four more slots

Which, of the hundreds of silver and moderns to choose from, do you eliminate?

It's a tough choice, but one YOU have to make.

Thanks for the recommendations. After looking through the commemorative halves at this website (PCGS) there are a few that have a good look. Pricing in higher grade might be a problem though.

Just a thought...but does anyone know how the Hard-Times tokens would fit into these slots? They're roughly large cent sized...so smaller than a half. Not to disparage anyones' collection, but I'm really not that into the commem halves and the mid 1830's is a pretty interesting point in our nations financial history...thoughts?

I believe Hard Times tokens are the same size as their contemporary large cents, which would put them at about 28-29mm whereas half dollars are fairly uniform at 30.6mm.

For my set, which I attempt to keep as original VF-EF, I chose the Columbian and Maine and left the other two holes currently blank. The modern commem dollar was filled with a circulated Lafayette dollar.
