Classic Head Gold Coins

Something I have been pondering

After spending some time looking at the new Gold Coin Encyclopedia something surprised me, these sets while I am sure a really challenging set to get nice not screwed with coins.....

Grade wise many options, no real killer coins and lots of mints in the quarter eagle set, more then the half eagle set.....

Obviously this seems like an advanced set to work on.....

Opinions?

Great sets, especially if you have the ability to go for die varieties.

Probably would be some good cherry picking on these coins, judging by the amount of discussion these coins get on this message board.....

They have grown on me over time. I like the portrait of Liberty on the quarter eagle a little better than the half eagle. The branch mint issues are more plentiful (four vs. two) and tougher in the quarter eagle set.

I like the classic head series a lot, have a few coins, and plan to collect by die variety. I only wish the price of gold has not risen so much, as prices for these coins has doubled in the past three years or so.

I would love to collect this series. Just a little pricy for me. If I ever sell my current collection I would collect these and or the turban head half eagles.

I guess the pricey thing comes into what grades you would be willing to collect these coins in.....

Now the Charlotte & Dahlonega coins are expensive in any grade in this set, that is true for any coins from those mints.....

It is amazing what these coins cost considering how old they are and how few of them you typically see.....

If one where to attempt this set in either the QE & HE this would be a real nice challenge that I agree is likely to pay off nicely.....

  • I agree. It’s an interesting set and these coins were issued during an interesting time in this country's economic history.

I am going to attempt the quarter eagle set but I imagine it will take a long time, a lot of cash and patience.
  • I like them. I like them a lot. One of the most under-rated and to me, one of the nicest. My fantasy set. Not sure I could afford it.

I have a feeling that affording the set is no more difficult then finding the coins in undamaged condition for the set.....

Seems like most of these coins auctioned off are ANACS net coins.....

I don't really care for the design, but I can understand the appeal of the set.

I also agree with Nysoto that is too bad this series doubled in price recently, probably because of the increase in bullion value.image
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
