Another ZAR to PCGS....a Gold one this time !! GRADES IN

Yep - it's the famed 1892 Double Shaft Pond.

The picture is aweful but I tried to capture the wear on the hair. The coin is nice EF on the Reverse but there are a few little marks on the Obverse and there is wear on the hair.

Where is the wear on the hair you ask. Well dare to stare at the wear on the hair and don't despair !!

Anyhow - let's see how my grading skills have improved. I say VF30 or VF35.

I'll play it conservatively and go for VF30.

I have to add that I took a load of shots but this one was the best for the hair detail. Pretty crummy still, I know, but better then nothing.

  • Also sending a 1897 1/2 Pond.

Obverse is EF but the Reverse is a bit beat.

VF 30 or VF 35 imo.

    Final guess - VF 30.

I must admit that the image leaves a lot to be desired, but judging from what I see, I feel a VF30 grade is definitely conservative. I hope it doesn't get bagged for the gouge on the bust.

    Good luck, ZARcoinlover!!

Just don't do the "scratch test" like your "alias" GCL did! image

  • Yes - apologies for the photo !!

The gauge on the bust is actually part of the suit that Kruger was wearing so no problems there Jester.

Scratch test on a D/S wybrit. imageimage
  • Both graded XF45. image

The lesson learned here is that Krugers hair can definitely be more worn on gold coins then on the silver coins. Has anyone found this with other series ?

The 1892 fields also didn't look XF to me. I'll have to compare it with the 1892 Pond XF45 that I already have.

Anyhow - I'm happy with these grades.
