A Warning about European Coppers and Bronzes

AN IMPORTANT THREAD TO CONSIDER

.....and, an NGC sub-thread.

In the last year I have noticed an abundance of European coppers/bronzes which have had varying degrees of "blue colour" on their surfaces. I'm primarily speaking about MS coppers, not proofs which I've seen nothing really suspicious as of yet.

Several of these pieces are without a doubt of recent vintage because the toning is an attempt to "cover" some "improvements". Namely, it seems that someone or several miscreants are fond of using the needle technique to scratch carbon spots off of the surfaces. When particularly egregious, and badly done, they are either heating/smoothing or possibly lasering that tiny area to "blend" the offense.

So, be careful!! If the coin has those subtle blues, or blue/lavendar colours it can be entirely legit, but not if any tooling or mechanical damage is present under the toning.

HAPPY READING.
