  • I find Clark Smith to be a nice person.

I've bought several coins of him although he prices his coins at the higher end of the price spectrum.
  • here is what on the acution description: <<Grade is proof-like UNC (probably MS-61 or MS-62 quality).

We will send the coin to NGC or PCGS for the buyer (we guarantee certification).>>

I personally think that it is better to get slab first before sell on this coin. Nice design coin.

I think this coin is on the high end of the price spectrum... though in fairness these have always been extremely expensive coins.

He should get this coin put into an NGC or PCGS holder before listing it.

Hey, that's MY coin! Well, no it isn't... image

Although I do have that exact coin... granted, mine needs some assistance from NCS: imageimage

I had no idea these were even remotely that valuable. I picked mine out of a collection a local dealer bought, about 4 years ago, for $125. Even with NCS, mine is nowhere near as nice as the one the seller is offering. image

My first thoughts also....why not just send it away and get it certified, regardless. This is not a slabbed vs raw debate, but the fact is not too many people have the guts to buy a raw coin via eBay.

I think he is fishing with the hopes he can hook one of the obscenely weathly Russian buyers into a quick couple of purchases.

I like the character of mine better anyway. The mark on the reverse is a die clash.

Coinpictures, it looks like you got a great deal on yours. If you're ever planning to sell it, now's the time to get that baby slabbed and get it on the market. Russian coins have seen incredibly strong prices the last few years, but who knows how long that will last.

Clark Smith's example for $5800, who knows what that really looks like in hand. I don't have any reason to doubt his grading, but the photo isn't of much use.

I, too, question if Russian coins will stay at this level. I also saw this one pop up today (Link). It is indeed the highest graded for the date, but a 1831 MS-64 for $2500 sounds out of line. I bookmarked it out of curiosity to follow.

OK....one more post and I am walking away from the computer for now. I swear. Instead of the $2500 in the previous post, I could easily put it on this MS-66 5 kopek for $999 and this 1914 AU-53 for $777, and sleep well at night.

  • Clark Smiths pictures are usually scanned and look better in hand as the scanning hides the luster.

I was pleasently surprised when I bought a few Sovereigns from him a while ago.

I must add that I only look at his gold coin though.
