Mexican Caballito info and pic

Here we have the 1911 long ray Caballito KM # 453 , struck from .9030 silver, net .7859 this is a hefty coin that had more intrinsic value than our US Morgan! This is the first hole to fill in your Dansco 7220 vol 2 type set book (Thanks Bill!) Just a wonderful and dramatic design. Minted between 1910 and 1914 the keys are the 1912 and 1914 with mintages of 322,000 and 120,000.

I feel you should stick with BU examples on the common dates as there are enough around to pick and choose. XF + is ok for the 1912 and 1914. The design does lead to some hard calls between weak strike/worn dies and rub.

If you would like to add your insight and knowledge of this series and or post a pic to this thread please do so!

Never had one. They're lovely coins, though.

Tell me about the Dansco 7220 type set books- what do they encompass?

LM, The set I have is broken up into two volumes, #1 being one Centavo to Fifty Centavo from 1905 to 1983 and #2 One Peso to Five Thousand Peso 1910-1988 as well as 1949/1978-80/1982-89 Onza. I have the optional gold page 1817-1959 One through Fifty Peso, Seven coins total. These are pretty rare albums and the local coins shops charge a Hundred bucks for a set when/if they have them!

A good alternative is the Whitman 9524 single volume type set book that covers 1905-1964 and is kind of a condensed version of the Dansco. If you can find these at shows or coin shops pick them up!

I have filled up the Dansco and I am working on the Whitman now.

I also love this design. I don't collect the series, but couldn't pass up a nice example. Seems that this date, a first-year issue, can be found in very nice condition for a reasonable price.

Filam, is that coin as frosty and full of luster as it appears in the image? If so that is a moose!

They are beautiful coins. When I fantasize about what I'd include in a set of classic darkside designs, the Caballito is always included.

    My #7220 Dansco contains 5 pages with coins dated from 1905 1¢ Type 1 to 1977 $100.

Wish Dansco would reconsider reprinting the Foreign Coin Type Albums ;( I really Want a Dansco #7240 Cuba Type.

Hang onto that puppy! As I mention in a different thread, these rarely show up original or toned...

Nice image Big Mark!! I know what you mean about finding Caballitos with original skin and toning. It's a small world because I have a 1911 with almost the same toning as yours on Ebay right now, Item # 330161753247

Still looking for the 1912 that has eluded me. Would like to find a nice PCGS or NGC one

    Oh well

Mexican coin company had four 1914 and NO 1912 Cabs at Long Beach, I wonder if the 1912 is undervalued?

Hard to say. Wouldn't be surprised if it got bid-up to over $400, though.

OK, do these come "full head" (not trying to be rude this time at least)? I would really like to see a better struck as the design is so attractive. Thought about bidding on the matte proof patterns that have occ. been up for sale over the last several years but even then the prices were very high.
As I recall there were 50 centavo coins available also.
    Love that Milled British (1830-1960)
    Well, just Love coins, period.

The only information I could find was this: "The coin was designed by M. Charles Pillet, a French artist. Patterns for the One Peso were made in 1908 and 1909, and for a proposed Fifty Centavos of the same design in 1907. The Fifty Centavos was rejected."

    I'll try to find pictures.

Good find. I think there may be a few more of these patterns out there than is recognized, but they really are very beautiful in any case.

Does anyone know where a PCGS-certified 1914 Caballito in Mint State might be available?

MS examples are quite tough... AU examples surface and are usually offered in the 1300-1800 range depending on quality.
