An PCGS MS63 1911-D Saint from Becker & Kuehnert, around 1990 or so. That was a lot of money for me at the time and I looked at that coin every day for 2-3 months.

A 1904 $20 gold piece purchased for $50 from Earl Schill of Detroit in May of 1966. I was 15. I traded in all sorts of duplicates and junk plus about $7 hard money. His wife was very patient and kind working with me on it, even though now I realize that it was probably not worth their time. I did eventually buy my 1909-SVDB from them to complete my collection. My first gold coin was a nice AU 1881 $10 gold piece for about $32. it was about 1966 and I was 14 years old and that was a months wages delivering 188 newspapers every afternoon.
My very first gold coin. Not purchased though... it was a gift to my mother when she was a baby, kept in a bank box all those years, then she gave it to me. I'll always cherish it!
I bought two at the same time. They were a 1991 1/10 oz Gold American Eagle PCGS MS69 and a 2000 1/10 oz Gold American Eagle Proof PCGS PR69DCAM. I no longer have them. I sold all my gold a few months ago.
In the mid-60's, I bought a 1927 Saint for $47.00 from a mail order dealer in Coin World. Wish I still had it. Today, it would have graded at least a MS64.

Actually i got it FREE. for selling raffle tickets for my coin club about 1972 . they weren't very expensive then and you got one for selling 100 raffle tickets--even though i had to buy about 15 myself. (then i won one also) both quarter eagle indians. I cant remember the first one i bought however. Bob
1877 PCGS Quarter Eagle in AU50. I thought it really cool to own a coin with a mintage in the 1,600 range. I traded a bunch of low grade ho-hum stuff for it too.
I could spend hundreds of dollars on a silver coin with little intrinsic silver value, but always felt that buying gold was somehow "expensive" even when the value of the gold in the coin was a large percentage of its value.
I bought five world gold coins as my first gold. Swiss 20 Franc Helvetia, Peru Libra, British Sovereign and two others I can't recall.
turn-o'-the-century French 20 francs 'Angel' coin. A really cool design for an inexpensive buillion type coin. Purchased it in the mid-90s while i was in the Marine Corps.
(2) 2005 1/4 eagles. Both graded MS69. Only had it graded to ensure it was real. I got them off eBay. I know, I know, one should not buy raw gold on eBay. But all that I bought has been authenticated, so I guess it was not a bad idea after all. I got good deals. I also had a 1929 $2.50 indian for a short time, but I had to give it back after it came back from grading. MS63.

Hell, I don't need to exercise.....I get enough just pushing my luck.
My first pre-1933 gold was a 1909 $2.50 Indian I won off a bid-board for $22 in 2002-2003
Around the same time I saved up from a summer job and bought a Fine 1857 $5 Lib.
