Is there a Dark/Far/Evil Side Coin that you feel looks very "American?"

Are there any foreign or ancient coins that you feel almost or do look more American than some American coins?

"American" definition is very different for each person. To some - it's liberty, freedom, opportunity, while to others it's the feeling of evil, darkness, hatred, supremacy...

So, what constitutes an "American" look, in your mind? Is it an Eagle (borrowed from Germany in 1776)? Or Lady Liberty, who, originally was a voluptuous Native American woman portrayed sitting next to a giant armadillo or with a tomahawk, but later turned into a borrowed image of a Greek Goddess (wrapped in toga and wearing high-laced sandals)?

Sure- a lot of French designs have a figure of Liberty who resembles the Statue of Liberty, who, after all, is a French creation herself.

  • TwoKopeiki, I was asking in the spirit of what's American-looking to you. I guess I was also just generalizing and merging all American coins together for a general or stereotypical "look" - the kind of thing that a non-collector would identify as American. There are some basic things that differentiate American coins from "world and ancient" coins, so I was referring to those things.

Well, to me, American - looking would be indian-head cent image

So, i guess, this coin would also be American-looking to me, since some Indians were known for their archery ...

  • and there's an 1815 canadian halfpenny token that features a VERY American-looking eagle on one side-- and I think it even has an AMerican-looking shield on its breast. Heard somebody once say that this token was struck in Boston for use in Canada, but I don't know if that's accurate. If so, that might qualify it as an Early American Token

Well there's all the Liberian Morgan Dollar restrikes... image

U.S. colonial coinage and contemporary British coinage look very similar (to be expected).

Well, not the answer that you're looking for, but the three most American looking US coins for me are all from the commemorative half dollar series: Oregon, Stone Mountain and California.

I think this one fits the bill. Picked it up for a quarter today at my local shop. It might be the prettiest coin I own!
