Counterfeits seem to get more sophisticated every year.
And guys will go to great lengths to make them look good.
The older fakes are easier to detect - with a loupe - in general - any place where there is a SOLID dark print line - when it is copied - the solid line under magnification will appear as PRINT DOTS.
Here is a page from the Counterfeit Detector(click on the pic to enlarge it) - SCD/Krause Publications by Bob Lemke.
If a card has the more sophisticated laser reproduction - then card stock, card weight and other small items, like the copywrite is examined to detect a fake.
I'm not that knowledgeable on this topic - just what I've heard here and briefly read.
Good luck - hope you find a nice RC Don't be a stranger, shoes optional your friend mike
Buy graded or from a VERY reputable dealer on cards like that. A 10x loupe should really help you out with the dots, alos carry a common (a common rc if possible) and compare. Within 10 years some of these fakes will be so good no one can tell the difference and cards will be worthless. j/k on that last part....or am I.
hey guys thanks for all of your help I have one more thing to ask I just got a 96-97 topps chrome kobe psa 10 rookie for $164. was that a steal or not?

SMR lists it at $430 so based on that I would say yes. But I don't follow Kobe rookie cards and don't know how strong the market is for his stuff. The pop report shows 571 cards have been graded a PSA 10 so it's not that tough to find them.
link? Sure it is not a youthquake insert? If you got it that cheap there is something fishy about the auction or the seller listed it as coby biyank krm rockiey crd
Here what he said when I wrote him an e-mail asking what happen to his ebay account The ebay problem is that someone broke in (hacked in) to my ebay account and was placing a ton of phony bids on all kinds of auctions. I think it was some kid playing games. So, I had ebay freeze my account until they can figure it all out. I would assume that everything should be worked out within the next few days. So...No worries....I will be happy to take care of you. If you have any questions please let me know. my question you you guys is should I wait and see if he gets his ebay account back and then send the check or should I just forget about it? he did have 100% feedback. Thanks for everyone help.
Assuming that you are not him....I would chalk up $164 to experience and remember that if it's too good to be true, it probably isn't. Any thoughts on why he might hide the cert number of this card?

I wouldn't send the guy a dime, it's too shady. No one I've ever heard of has had their eBay account hacked into so the hacker can place phony bids.
Don't buy cards that are ridiculously under-priced from 17 feedback sellers who have never sold a single card before on eBay, and the only history you can see is that they purchase $3-5 eTopps cards. There are red-flags with red smoke coming out of them all over this guy.
As far as a phony Ryan rookie, just look closely at the black ink around Ryan's name on the front of the card with any magnifying glass... it needs to the solid black, no tiny print dots. Most fakes will have tiny print dots that make up the black area.
thanks so much everyone for ya help I went ahead and brought me a nolan ryan rookie psa 5 for $240 shipped is this one a good price or is it way below price also like the kobe?

I saw it for $3.00 a while back, but it had coca-cola/coffee
stains on the f/b covers, so I passed.

If he's not a registered user - isn't that risky to send him money?
